Chapter 4 - Shadows on Willow Creek

The Knox County Hospital intensive care unit was quiet, lit only by the pale green glow of heart monitors.

When I arrived with Trent and two armed security personnel, the hallway outside Room 412 was already secure. Trent’s men had intercepted Dalton’s two enforcers in the lobby, turning them over to state troopers on outstanding warrants for assault and illegal firearm possession.

I stepped into the room.

Mateo Ruiz lay in the bed, his head wrapped in heavy bandages, his face bruised and swollen. Tubes ran into his arms, and a ventilator whistled rhythmically beside his head.

A woman sat by his bedside, holding his hand. She looked up sharply as I walked in, her eyes wide with fear. She was in her late twenties, wearing a crisp navy suit and holding a thick briefcase.

"Who are you?" she asked guardedly, standing up to block my path. "If you're with Marcus Dalton, I have three state troopers waiting down the hall."

"I'm Mason Calloway," I said, holding up my hands. "I own the property on Willow Creek Road. And your brother... or rather, Elena, Caleb, and Rosie... are currently safe at my ridge cabin under twenty-four-hour guard."

The tension in the woman's shoulders visibly broke. She slumped back into her chair, letting out a long breath.

"I'm Victoria Sterling," she said, offering her hand. "I’m a legal aid attorney from Nashville. Mateo reached out to my office three weeks ago before he was attacked. He knew Dalton was hunting him, and he was trying to secure legal protection for his siblings before Dalton could enforce those fraudulent debt contracts."

"How bad is he?" I asked, looking at Mateo.

"Severe concussion, broken ribs, internal bleeding," Victoria said, her voice tight with anger. "He was jumped in an alley outside a shelter in Knoxville four days ago. He managed to crawl to a gas station before passing out. He’s been in a medically induced coma since."

"Dalton showed me a conservatorship document signed by Judge Miller," I said, sitting in the visitor chair across from her. "He claimed Mateo signed away his guardianship rights."

Victoria snorted with contempt. "It’s a complete forgery, Mr. Calloway. Mateo never signed anything. Dalton took out predatory loans in Mateo's name using stolen identity documents, then used a corrupt local judge to sign off on emergency custody transfers so he could use the kids as leverage to force Mateo to surrender the deed to their mother's ancestral land in the valley."

"Ancestral land?" I asked, frowning. "Elena told me they were squatting on my property."

"They were squatting on your lot because it was abandoned," Victoria explained, pulling a map out of her briefcase and spreading it on the table. "But the Ruiz family owns the adjacent twenty acres right behind your Willow Creek lot. Their mother inherited it decades ago. Dalton couldn't get the state bypass permits without control of both your parcel and the Ruiz parcel. When Mateo refused to sell, Dalton tried to break him."

The depth of Dalton’s ruthlessness was staggering. He hadn't just targetted Elena and the kids out of petty spite; he had systematically isolated three orphaned children, driven them out of their home, forced them onto my abandoned land, and then used their illegal presence there to frame them as homeless vagrants unfit for custody.

"We have an emergency hearing in Cedar Ridge Circuit Court in forty-eight hours," Victoria said, her eyes flashing with determination. "Dalton’s lawyers filed a motion for immediate physical custody of the minors, citing abandonment and safety hazards."

"Judge Miller presides over that court, doesn't he?" I asked.

"Yes," Victoria nodded grimly. "And Miller is in Dalton’s pocket."

"Not anymore," I said, pulling out the recording device containing Arthur Vance’s full confession. "We’re going to give Judge Miller a choice: recuse himself and dismiss Dalton’s petition, or go to federal prison alongside him."

Before Victoria could answer, the lights in the hospital room flickered.

Outside in the hallway, a loud crash echoed, followed by the sound of shouting and shattering glass. Trent’s voice came barking through my earpiece:

"Mason! We've got a breach at Blackwood Ridge! Someone just cut the power to the cabin security system!"
