Chapter 10 - The Unbreakable Foundation

Three years after the flight to Reykjavík.
The sun shone brightly over the historic courtyard of the Owens-Thomas House in Savannah.
The garden was transformed into an intimate wedding sanctuary. White silk draping hung from the ancient live oak trees, and hundreds of white roses and yellow jasmine flowers filled the air with an intoxicating scent.
A string quartet played a gentle, elegant melody as eighty guests sat in the courtyard rows.
Sitting in the front row were Nora, serving as my maid of honor, looking stunning in an emerald green dress; Aaron, wearing a sharp grey suit; and Owen and Mia, who served as our ring bearer and flower girl. Owen was eleven now, tall and handsome, while eight-year-old Mia wore a white lace dress with a crown of yellow jasmine in her hair.
At the altar beneath an arch woven with southern greenery stood Julian, looking breathtakingly handsome in a classic black tuxedo, his eyes fixed on the back of the aisle with an expression of pure, unadulterated devotion.
The music shifted to a rich, swelling acoustic arrangement.
I stepped onto the stone pathway, holding a bouquet of white roses and Icelandic mountain wildflowers—a special detail Julian had ordered imported just for today.
I walked down the aisle alone. I didn't need a father to give me away. I belonged to myself, and I was stepping forward freely to share my life with the man I loved.
When I reached the altar, Julian took both of my hands in his. His grip was warm, strong, and steady.
The minister smiled warmly at the crowd. "We are gathered here today to celebrate the union of Claire Whitmore and Julian Vance—two people who understand that a lasting home is built not on fragile appearances, but on an unbreakable foundation of trust, respect, and unconditional love."
Julian looked into my eyes, speaking his vows with a voice that didn't waver:
"Claire, three years ago, you had the extraordinary courage to walk away from a life that sought to minimize you. You proved that you are a restorer—not just of historic buildings, but of your own dignity and joy. I promise to stand beside you through every storm, to celebrate your strength, to honor your boundaries, and to cherish you and the life we are building together, every day for the rest of my life."
Tears of pure, radiant happiness spilled over my eyelashes.
I took a deep breath, looking into the eyes of the man who had shown me what real love looked like.
"Julian," I spoke my vows, my voice echoing clearly through the sunlit courtyard. "I spent most of my life believing I had to earn my place in the world by carrying burdens that weren't mine. You showed me that real love doesn't demand sacrifice of one's soul. You loved me when I was rebuilding, you honored my past, and you gave me a future where I am free to be entirely myself. I give you my heart, my trust, and my life forever."
"By the power vested in me," the minister declared, beaming, "I now pronounce you husband and wife! Julian, you may kiss your bride!"
Julian pulled me into his arms, dipping me slightly as he kissed me deeply, passionately, under the warm southern sun.
The courtyard erupted into cheers, applause, and joyful laughter.
Owen and Mia came running up the altar steps, throwing their arms around our waists. "Uncle Julian! Aunt Claire!" Mia giggled happily.
Julian picked Mia up in his arm while pulling Owen and me close against his side. "We did it, guys!" he laughed.
As our guests gathered in the sunlit garden for the reception, Nora walked over with two glasses of champagne, handing one to me.
"To Iceland," Nora raised her glass with a radiant smile. "And to the best thirty-eight missed calls of your life."
I looked around the courtyard at the smiling faces of my true family—Nora, Aaron, Owen, Mia, Julian, and the wonderful friends we had made in this beautiful city.
I raised my glass, clinking it against hers.
May you like
"To freedom," I said softly. "And to new foundations."
The sun began its slow, golden descent behind the historic roofs of Savannah, bathing our home in a bright, warm, unbreakable light.
