Chapter 9 - Reclaiming the Legacy

When I returned to the house above the Oregon coast that evening, the air was crisp and chilly, signaling the arrival of late autumn.
I walked through the rooms, looking at the clean, beautiful spaces. I had replaced the furniture Grant and I had owned together with pieces that reflected my own taste—warm oaks, soft woven fabrics, and shelves filled with books I actually wanted to read.
I went down to the guest room—the room I had originally prepared for Darlene with so much care and effort.
I looked at the reading chair by the window. I didn't throw it out. Instead, I moved it up to the primary bedroom, placing it right next to the glass wall overlooking the ocean.
I sat down in the chair, wrapped a soft woolen blanket around my shoulders, and pulled out the old, handwritten letter my grandmother had left me. The ink was slightly faded, but her elegant cursive was still sharp and clear.
“Create a life that no one can ever take from you.”

I smiled, a tear slipping down my cheek as I pressed the paper against my chest. "I did it, Grandma," I whispered into the quiet room. "I finally did it."
The house felt alive now, filled with a warm, peaceful energy that belonged entirely to me. I was no longer the quiet financial analyst hiding behind a loud, arrogant husband. I was Tessa Marlowe, the owner of my own destiny, living in a fortress of my own making.
