Chapter 5 - The Corporate Insurgency

The next morning at Carter Capital Group was nothing short of an execution. I walked into the main boardroom at 8:00 AM, my tailored charcoal suit immaculate, my expression an impenetrable mask of absolute control.

The room was packed. My father’s old allies—men who had sat on the board of directors since the nineties—looked smug, believing that my sudden departure from the Blackstone merger yesterday had given them the leverage they needed to force me out of the CEO position.

"Ethan," the senior board member, an old billionaire named Thomas Sterling, spoke up as I took my seat at the head of the table. "Your actions yesterday cost this company three hundred million dollars in projected equity. The board has called an emergency session to review your leadership status. We have already received a directive from Marcus Carter in Switzerland suggesting a transition of power."

I didn't answer immediately. I slowly opened a sleek black leather folder, sliding a single sheet of paper across the polished walnut table toward Sterling.

"That is a formal notice of corporate foreclosure on Sterling Holdings," I said, my voice deadpan and icy. "As of 6:00 AM this morning, Carter Capital has acquired the primary debt obligations of your secondary logistics firm. If you vote against me today, Thomas, I will call the note by noon. Your company will be in receivership before the market closes."

Sterling’s face turned a sickly shade of gray as he looked at the document. "You... you can't do this, Ethan. This is hostile."

"This is business, Thomas," I countered, looking around the room at the other board members, who were suddenly looking down at their folders, terrified to meet my gaze. "For four years, you men have acted as the eyes and ears for my father. You’ve reported my every move, my every investment, to an old man sitting in an alpine villa. That ends today."

I tapped the screen of the main digital display on the wall. A series of financial records bloomed across the monitor—wire transfers, offshore accounts, and encrypted emails linking my father’s Swiss trust to a series of illegal short-selling campaigns designed to suppress the stock values of our own subsidiaries.

"My father didn't retire to Switzerland to rest," I explained to the silent room. "He relocated to avoid a federal investigation into insider trading that occurred during the 2022 acquisition cycle. Every single one of you signed off on those trades. If I fall, I take this entire board with me to the federal penitentiary in Terre Haute. Do we understand each other?"

The room fell dead silent. The men who had ruled the Chicago financial district for decades looked like children caught in a trap.

"Now," I said, closing my folder with a crisp click. "The Blackstone merger will be renegotiated on my terms, not my father’s. And the corporate security budget will be tripled, effective immediately, under the exclusive command of Marcus Vance. If anyone has an objection, speak now so my legal team can prepare your exit packages."

No one said a word. The insurgency had been crushed before it could even declare its parameters. I stood up and walked out of the room, knowing that while I had secured the tower, the real battle would be fought on the ground, where my children were waiting.
