Chapter 7 - The Verdict and Consequences

The jury deliberated for less than two hours.
When they returned to the courtroom, the atmosphere was suffocatingly tense. Jason stood with his hands folded, his knuckles white.
"Will the defendant please stand," Judge Harris requested.
Jason stood up, flanked by his lawyers.
"On count one, Grand Larceny in the First Degree, how do you find?"
"Guilty," the jury foreman announced clearly.
"On count two, Identity Fraud and Wire Larceny..."
"Guilty."
"On count three, Aggravated Domestic Assault..."
"Guilty."
"On count four, Felony Burglary and Breach of Protective Order..."
"Guilty."
Count by count, twelve times in a row, the word echoed through the courtroom like thunder. Guilty.
Jason’s mother burst into tears in the gallery, while his father buried his face in his hands. Jason slumped into his chair, staring blankly at the polished mahogany table as his reality crumbled around him.
Three weeks later, sentencing was handed down.
Judge Harris did not hold back. "Mr. Miller, your actions represent a systematic, malicious attempt to destroy a family, defraud an elderly citizen, and strip away the dignity of those who trusted you. You have shown zero remorse for your crimes."
The judge slammed his gavel down hard.
"I sentence you to a total of twenty-five years in state penitentiary, without the possibility of parole for the first fifteen years. You are further ordered to pay full restitution of all stolen funds and legal costs incurred by the victim."
As the bailiffs handcuffed Jason and led him away in chains toward the heavy steel doors at the back of the courtroom, he turned to look at me one last time.

I didn't glare at him. I didn't smirk. I simply stood straight, met his gaze, and watched him disappear into the dark corridor of justice.
In the weeks following the trial, the State Attorney General’s Office moved swiftly against Apex Horizon Properties. Using the evidence from Jason's ledger, federal agents indicted seven top executives for corporate fraud, racketeering, and illegal land seizure. The predatory syndicate that had terrorized our community was completely dismantled.
