Chapter 5 - The Master Audit

Two weeks later, the federal prosecution team formally brought me on as a special consultant to lead the forensic audit of the Harrington family’s seized offshore networks.
Sitting in a high-security conference room at the U.S. Attorney’s office, surrounded by whiteboards covered in organizational charts, I traced the digital breadcrumbs that Chad’s father had hidden behind complex layers of shell trusts in the Cayman Islands.
Prosecutor Jenkins sat beside me, flipping through my eighty-page analysis report. "This is incredible, Julian. You found three hidden accounts in Zurich that even the IRS Criminal Investigation unit missed."
"Chadwick Senior used an old technique called 'loan-back fraud,'" I explained, pointing to a diagram on the screen. "He wired illegal funds from his offshore accounts to dummy companies in Nevada, which then 'loaned' the money back to his bridal stores as capital investments. It made his dirty cash look like legitimate corporate debt."
"And Vanessa's transfer?" Jenkins asked.
"Vanessa's eighty-five-thousand-dollar stolen deposit was placed into Account 409," I showed her on the spreadsheet. "Which was the exact account Chad used to pay off his illegal offshore bookmakers. Her 'dream wedding' was literally funding Chad's secret gambling debts."
Just then, Agent Vance walked into the room, holding a freshly printed document.
"We just received word from Chad Harrington’s defense legal team," Vance said with a dark laugh. "Chad has officially agreed to turn state’s evidence."
Jenkins blinked in surprise. "Chad flipped?"
"Not only did he flip," Vance said, "but part of his plea deal condition was testifying against Vanessa. He’s claiming she was the one who suggested using stolen trust funds to cover the company's bad debts."
I shook my head, a cold chuckle escaping my lips. "The 'dream husband' she stole from me to marry just threw her directly under the bus to cut five years off his own sentence."
"That’s how these elite financial predators operate," Jenkins noted dryly. "When the boat starts sinking, they throw everyone else overboard first. What do you want to do, Julian?"
"Let Chad testify," I said calmly. "Because what Chad doesn't know is that I have the complete digital forensic logs from Vanessa's phone. His text messages explicitly show him instructing her to steal the money from my account."

Jenkins smiled, her eyes lighting up with professional admiration. "You kept those logs?"
"I'm a forensic auditor, Sarah," I said, leaning back with a quiet confidence. "I never lose a paper trail."
