Chapter 2 - The Shadows of Detroit

By 3:00 AM, the rain outside the Beverly Hills estate had turned into a steady, rhythmic thrum. Inside the war room on the basement level, the walls were lined with high-definition monitors flashing data feeds from across the country. Victor, Damian’s chief information officer, tapped a key, bringing up a grainy street-camera image from a residential block in Detroit.
"It wasn't an accident, Damian," Victor said, his face grim in the blue light of the monitors. "Three days ago, Elena’s apartment building was deliberately targeted by an arsonist. The local precinct ruled it a faulty gas line within two hours—a suspiciously fast determination, even for that district."
Damian leaned over the glass table, his fists clenching until his knuckles turned white. "Who controls that sector now?"
"The Falcone syndicate," Victor replied, pulling up a dossier of a bloated, cruel man with a scarred neck. "Donato Falcone. He’s been trying to clear that entire block to build a high-rise casino development funded by offshore money. Elena was the last holdout. She refused to sell her clinic because she was running a free medical program for the neighborhood kids."
"Donato Falcone," Damian whispered the name, a dark, lethal memory surfacing. "He was one of the men who put those two bullets in my chest eight years ago. He thought he finished me then, and now he thinks he can erase the woman who saved me."
Marcus entered the room, holding a medical report. "The doctor looked at Emily. She has a mild fever from the cold, but she’s sleeping soundly. She wouldn't let go of the bear until we dried it by the heater. Boss... she was carrying this inside the bear’s torn seam."
Marcus placed a small, metallic flash drive on the glass table. It was wrapped in plastic to protect it from the rain.
Victor immediately plugged the drive into an isolated terminal. Within seconds, rows of encrypted financial ledgers flooded the screen. These weren't the medical records of a neighborhood nurse; these were the hidden, international banking transactions of the Falcone family—the exact digital trail proving that Donato Falcone was laundering money for corrupt city officials and federal judges across the Midwest.
"Elena didn't just refuse to sell her clinic," Damian realized, a grim smile touching his lips. "She knew they would try to kill her. She gathered the rope to hang them, and she gave it to her daughter to deliver to me."

"This data is worth hundreds of millions on the black market, Damian," Victor warned. "The moment Donato realizes the girl escaped with this drive, he will send every contract killer on the payroll to find her."
"Let them come," Damian said, turning toward the armory doors at the back of the room. "Tell the men to lock down the estate perimeter. We are going to war for a six-year-old girl, and I want the streets of this city painted red before Falcone even knows we've left the driveway."
