Chapter 4 - The Counterstrike

By 3:00 PM, the story had exploded across every major news network in the country.

THE CHICAGO TRIBUNE: "PARKER LOGISTICS MERGER IN JEOPARDY AS CEO FACES EXPLOSIVE FEDERAL LAWSUIT" BLOOMBERG FINANCIAL: "APEX GLOBAL HALTS BILLION-DOLLAR MERGER PENDING ETHICS INVESTIGATION" CNN: "PROMINENT ADVOCACY ATTORNEY EXPOSES SHADOW STAFFING RING IN CHICAGO HIGH SOCIETY"

I sat in my Lincoln Park office, watching the news ticker scroll across the wall-mounted television screen. Lily sat on the couch beside Frank, a bright, relieved smile finally breaking through her months of exhaustion as she watched the coverage.

"The public response is overwhelming, Clara," my senior paralegal, Maya, announced, walking in with a stack of telephone messages three inches thick. "We’ve received calls from four other former employees of Vanguard Staffing. They all report similar patterns of coercion, unpaid wages, and threats from Richard Parker's legal team."

"Document every single one," I instructed. "We're building a class-action suit against the parent company."

Suddenly, the front door of the foundation swung open.

The heavy, authoritative tread of polished leather shoes echoed through the hallway. A towering man in his late sixties walked into the main office space, flanked by two imposing men in dark suits.

Richard Parker.

Ethan's father and the ruthless patriarch of the Parker empire. His steel-gray hair was slicked back, his eyes like two pieces of chipped flint behind gold-rimmed spectacles. He carried an expensive ivory-handled walking stick, though he walked with the strength of a silverback gorilla.

"Out, everyone," Richard commanded, his voice a deep, gravelly baritone that demanded instant obedience.

Frank Knox stood up immediately, stepping between Richard and Lily, his hand resting casually near his hip jacket holster. "You're trespassing, Mr. Parker. Turn around and walk out before I throw you through that glass door."

Richard didn't even look at Frank. His piercing eyes were locked entirely on me.

"Leave us, Frank," I said quietly, holding up my hand. "Mr. Parker and I are going to have a brief, disappointing conversation."

Frank gave Richard one last lethal look before gesturing for Maya and the rest of the staff to move into the back conference room, closing the door behind them.

Richard stepped closer to my desk, leaning heavily on his walking stick. "You've made a very noisy mess, Clara. My son is an idiot, I admit that. He lacked the subtlety required to handle a domestic complication quietly. But you... you have crossed a line that will destroy you."

"I didn't cross a line, Richard," I said, leaning back in my leather chair, my hands folded calmly on the desk. "I drew a line. And your son stepped right over it."

Richard let out a harsh, dry laugh. "Do you honestly think a video and a weeping housekeeper are going to break a family that has owned judges and congressmen in this state for forty years? By tomorrow morning, the news cycle will shift. We will launch a campaign highlighting your history of aggressive litigation. We will frame this as a bitter ex-fiancée seeking revenge after being dumped."

"Try it," I challenged smoothly. "And I will release the offshore banking records for Vanguard Staffing that Frank Knox pulled from the Delaware registry three hours ago."

Richard went entirely motionless. His cold grey eyes narrowed into two dangerous slits.

"I know about the Cayman accounts, Richard," I continued, dropping my voice into a lethal whisper. "I know how you funneled untaxed corporate profits through Vanguard to pay off your executives' personal scandals for the past decade. Ethan was just following the family playbook you wrote."

"You are playing with fire, girl," Richard growled, his hand tightening around the ivory handle of his stick until his knuckles turned white. "You think you're a knight in shining armor? You're a former corporate attorney running a boutique charity. I can buy your entire foundation, burn it to the ground, and ensure you never practice law in this country again."

I stood up slowly, bringing my face level with his.

"You can try, Richard," I said, my voice vibrating with absolute, unshakeable confidence. "But while you were busy trying to buy judges, I spent eight years learning every single crack in your corporate armor. I don't just want Ethan's resignation. I want your entire shadow network dismantled. Now get out of my office before I have the marshals add you to the federal docket for jury tampering."

Richard glared at me for three long, agonizing seconds before turning on his heel and sweeping out of the building, his guards trailing behind him.
