Chapter 7 - The Final Legal Siege

The attempted arson and hostage-taking at the flagship restaurant completely shattered any remaining public sympathy for the Bennett family. The news media, which had previously published Margaret’s tearful interview, now ran continuous footage of Michael being led away in handcuffs, covered in soot, alongside the shocking audio recordings retrieved from the maid's quarters.

The public outrage turned into a wave of massive support for Emma and me. Leo’s Kitchen locations saw a surge of customers, with people lining up around blocks just to show solidarity with our victory over the abusive family cartel.

Margaret and Jennifer were captured three hours after the fire, caught trying to board a private charter flight to an unregistered destination at a small municipal airport north of Dallas. They were denied bail due to being high-flight risks and were currently placed in maximum-security holding cells awaiting their trial.

One month later, the federal courthouse of Dallas was packed for the final sentencing hearing.

I sat in the front row of the gallery, my arm wrapped protectively around Emma’s shoulders. She looked beautiful, healthy, her skin glowing, her hands completely healed, wearing a simple, elegant dark suit. Beside us sat Julian Vance, who had worked tirelessly with the federal prosecutors to ensure there was no loophole for my family to escape justice.

Across the courtroom, sitting at the defense table, were Margaret, Jennifer, and Michael. They were dressed in bright orange inmate jumpsuits, their wrists and ankles chained together. The arrogance was completely gone. Margaret looked ten years older, her eyes hollow and staring at the floor. Jennifer was weeping silently, her hands shaking, while Michael sat with a completely vacant, defeated expression.

The honorable Judge Rebecca Vance (Julian’s aunt, known for her absolute intolerance for corporate corruption) slammed her gavel down, bringing the courtroom to order.

"We are here today for the sentencing of Margaret, Jennifer, and Michael Bennett," Judge Vance began, her voice echoing through the silent courtroom. "The crimes committed by these defendants are not merely financial. They represent a calculated, systematic destruction of human dignity, driven by sheer greed and an appalling sense of entitlement. They abused the trust of a brother and son, and they subjected an innocent woman, Mrs. Emma Bennett, to conditions akin to modern-day indentured servitude under blackmail and threat of criminal framing."

The judge turned her cold, piercing gaze toward the defense table.

"For the charges of grand larceny, corporate fraud, and identity theft, I sentence Jennifer Bennett to a term of fifteen years in a federal penitentiary."

Jennifer let out a loud, strangled wail, her head hitting the mahogany table as the defense lawyers tried to comfort her.

"For the charges of attempted arson, extortion, and assault with a deadly weapon," Judge Vance continued, "I sentence Michael Bennett to a term of twenty years."

Michael didn't even flinch; he just stared blankly ahead, his fate sealed.

"And finally, for the charge of felony conspiracy, extortion, and human exploitation through coercion," the judge said, looking directly at my mother, "I sentence Margaret Bennett to a term of twelve years. Furthermore, the court orders a total asset forfeiture of all properties, luxury items, and offshore accounts obtained through the illegal diversion of the Leo Bennett Group’s funds. Every single asset will be returned to the sole possession of Leo and Emma Bennett."

The gavel came down with a heavy, final thud.

As the guards stepped forward to lead the prisoners away, Margaret suddenly looked back toward the gallery. She caught my eye, her lips trembling. "Leo... please," she whispered, a desperate, final plea for mercy.

I didn't say a word. I didn't shake my head. I simply turned my eyes away, looking down at my wife. The woman who had given me everything when I had nothing was the only family I had left.
