Chapter 8 - The Resurrection of Emma Hayes

The mirror in the cabin’s bathroom showed a woman I barely recognized.

My face was pale, the dark circles under my eyes a testament to the near-fatal blood loss I had suffered five days ago. But as I washed my face with the warm, lavender-scented water Gabriel’s team had provided, I noticed something that hadn't been there in years: a small, stubborn spark of defiance in my grey eyes.

I was no longer Emma Parker, the isolated suburban housewife who spent her days waiting for a man to notice her between business trips. I was Emma Hayes. The granddaughter of Arthur Hayes, and the sole guardian of the wealthiest infant in the state of Colorado.

The door to the bedroom clicked open, and Gabriel stepped inside, carrying a folder of legal documents. He had changed into a clean black flannel shirt, the silver Saint Jude medallion visible against his throat.

"Marcus is back from Denver," Gabriel said, setting the folder down on the pine table by the fire. "It's done, Emma. Ryan signed the unconditional waiver. You are completely, legally severed from him. He believes you passed away in the hospital on Friday afternoon."

I sat down in the leather armchair, pulling the heavy wool blanket over my lap as Liam entered, carrying Ethan, who was awake and blinking lazily at the golden firelight. I reached out and took my son, holding him against my chest, his warm, steady breath a perfect contrast to the cold memory of his father's house.

"He didn't even fight for him?" I whispered, my fingers stroking Ethan’s soft hair.

"He didn't even ask where the grave was," Gabriel said, his voice entirely devoid of emotion, though his eyes burned with a cold, protective rage. "He was only concerned with whether the video from the smart-hub would find its way to his senior partners. He’s a small man, Emma. He always was."

I looked down at the signature on the Family Court document—Ryan’s familiar, arrogant handwriting, the same script he had used to sign our marriage license three years ago. It felt like looking at a relic from a dead civilization.

"What do we do now, Gabriel?" I asked, looking up into his gray-green eyes. "We can't stay in this cabin forever. Eventually, the trust lawyers in Switzerland are going to require a physical appearance to clear the primary distributions."

"We move to the next phase," Gabriel said, walking over to the window and checking the security monitors that lined the frame. "The Vance firm has a private estate in the San Juan mountains near Telluride. It’s unlisted, fully secure, and has its own private airstrip. You and Ethan will live there under your maiden name until the court filings are finalized in Zurich."

He turned back to face me, his large hand coming down onto the back of my chair, his presence covering me like a heavy shield. "My team will remain on your perimeter for the next eighteen years, Emma. That was your grandfather's contract. But more than that... it’s my promise."

I reached out my free hand, my fingers wrapping around his large, calloused wrist. "Thank you, Gabriel. For the nursery floor. For everything."

"Don't thank me yet," Gabriel said, his fingers gently tightening around mine before he stepped back into the shadows of the room. "The world doesn't stay quiet for long when there’s forty million dollars sitting in a newborn’s name. Ryan might be handled, but his partners at the equity firm are already looking at the sudden liquidation of the Hayes holdings."
