Chapter 5 - THE SECRET LEDGER

The threat proved one thing: Tessa and my mother weren't working alone. Someone on the outside was helping them, watching me, trying to intimidate me into dropping the charges before the full criminal trial began.
Instead of retreating into fear, I took the envelope straight to Detective Miller and Evelyn.
"They're getting desperate," Miller noted, scanning the photograph for fingerprints. "Which means we're hitting where it hurts. We got a warrant to dig into your mother's financial records this morning."
What Evelyn and Miller discovered inside those records transformed the case from a messy family feud into a cold-blooded financial conspiracy.
Two months before my car accident, my mother had taken out a two-million-dollar life insurance policy on me through a private, non-traditional underwriting firm. She had forged my signature on the consent forms. The sole beneficiaries listed were Eleanor and Tessa.
Even worse, they found a paper trail showing heavy payments made from my mother's account to an ex-con named Marcus Vance—no relation to my lawyer Evelyn—who worked as a mechanic at a local chop shop.
"Marcus Vance was paid ten thousand dollars three days before your crash," Detective Miller revealed during a meeting at my apartment. "We picked him up two hours ago. He cracked the second we showed him the bank transfers. He admitted that Tessa hired him to weaken the brake lines on your car while it was parked in your mother's driveway."
The puzzle pieces snapped together with horrifying precision. It was never just about resentment or jealousy. It was a cold, calculated murder-for-profit scheme. They needed me dead to collect the two million dollars to pay off Tessa's massive gambling debts and fund my mother's extravagant lifestyle.
"They didn't just want me to disappear," I said softly, looking out the window at the city lights below. "They put a price tag on my head."

"And now we have the rope to hang them in court," Evelyn said, her voice firm and resolute. "Marcus Vance has agreed to testify against both of them in exchange for a plea deal. They are going down for attempted first-degree murder."
For the first time in my life, I felt the cold grip of victimhood slide off my shoulders. I was no longer the fragile girl huddled in a hospital bed hoping for love from monsters. I was the prime witness in their downfall.
