Chapter 8 - The Clear Water

The summer of 2026 arrived in a glorious burst of green and gold. The salt marshes along the Ashley River were alive with the sound of red-winged blackbirds and the soft, steady rush of the tide.

True to his word, Daniel had rebuilt the side porch of the Callahan home. The new cypress path wound gently through the garden, the wood smooth and fragrant under the sun, leading down to a wide, flat dock where the electric launch was moored.

Daniel helped me into the boat, his arms strong and careful as he lifted me from my wheelchair and placed me onto the cushioned bench at the stern. He sat beside me, untying the lines and pushing us off from the dock.

The boat moved with a silent, graceful slide into the main channel of the river. The water was like glass, reflecting the blue sky and the towering clouds above. The wind caught my hair, blowing it back from my face, and for the first time in my life, I didn't care who saw the scars on my neck or the pink tissue of my jawline. I felt beautiful. I felt alive.

"How does it feel?" Daniel asked, looking at me with a smile that made my chest swell.

"It feels like breathing," I said, reaching out to let my fingers trail in the cool, salt water. "It feels like I’m finally out of the house."

"You are, Grace," he said, reaching over to take my hand, his fingers slipping between mine. "And you’re never going back into the dark again."

While we were on the water, the state police were executing the arrest warrants at the Whitmore residence in Charleston. My father and mother were taken into custody without bail, their assets seized, their company dissolved, and their name permanently removed from the social registers of the city. Emily’s luxury condo was foreclosed upon, her expensive cars repossessed, and she was forced to move into a small, rented apartment in the outer suburbs, working as an entry-level clerk to pay off her mounting personal debts.

The justice was swift, clean, and absolute. The accounts were finally balanced.
