CHAPTER 1 I was eight months pregnant when I caught my husband cheating on me with his secretary in the office I helped him build from nothing

I was eight months pregnant when I caught my husband cheating on me with his secretary in the office I helped him build from nothing.

And the worst part?

He looked more annoyed about the spilled lunch on his carpet than the fact that he had just destroyed our marriage.

The container slipped from my shaking hands the moment I opened his office door.

Rice, vegetables, and soup exploded across the marble floor.

But I barely noticed.

Because sitting behind Ethan Carter’s expensive mahogany desk was a blonde woman in a tight red dress… straddling my husband’s lap while he kissed her neck like I didn’t exist.

For a second, the room spun.

My baby kicked hard inside my swollen stomach as if even she could feel my heartbreak.

The secretary looked up first. Her eyes widened in panic.

“Oh my God—”

Ethan turned around so fast his chair slammed into the wall.

“Emily?” he stammered, immediately pushing the woman off his lap.

Five years.

Five years of marriage.

Five years of sacrificing everything for him.

And this was how it ended.

I couldn’t speak. My throat felt tight, my chest burning so badly I thought I might collapse right there on the floor.

“Emily, wait—”

I turned and walked away before he could touch me.

Behind me, I heard him shouting my name through the hallway of Carter Technologies while employees pretended not to stare.

The tears blinded me as I drove home through downtown Chicago.

One hand stayed on the steering wheel.

The other rested protectively over my eight-month pregnant belly.

“Mommy’s okay,” I whispered through sobs. “I promise.”

But I wasn’t okay.

Not even close.

The betrayal hurt, but what destroyed me was remembering everything I had given up for him.

Before Ethan, I had my own career.

I was one of the top business consultants in Illinois. I had clients across the country, money in my own accounts, dreams bigger than this marriage.

But Ethan hated the idea of his wife working.

“A real family needs a mother at home,” he always told me.

And because I loved him, I believed him.

I left my career behind.

I cooked dinners while pregnant and exhausted.

I stayed awake beside him during every financial crisis.

When his company was drowning in debt, I secretly called former investors and convinced them to take meetings with him.

The contracts he celebrated?

Half of them existed because of my private recommendations.

But I never told him.

I wanted him to feel proud.

What a stupid mistake.

That night, Ethan came home acting irritated instead of guilty.

He loosened his tie and tossed his keys onto the counter.

“You embarrassed me today,” he snapped.

I stared at him in disbelief.

“Embarrassed you?” I repeated softly.

“Yes. You should’ve called before showing up at my office.”

I actually laughed.

A broken, exhausted laugh.

“You were cheating on your pregnant wife.”

He rolled his eyes like I was being unreasonable.

“It wasn’t serious, Emily.”

My stomach twisted painfully.

“It wasn’t serious?” I whispered.

“Stop acting dramatic.”

Then he said the words that changed everything.

“If we’re being honest, you’re lucky I haven’t divorced you already.”

Silence filled the kitchen.

Even the clock on the wall seemed to stop ticking.

Ethan stepped closer, his voice colder now.

“You don’t make money.”

“You don’t contribute anything.”

“Everything I built came from me.”

I looked at the man standing in front of me.

The man whose empire secretly existed because of MY connections.

MY sacrifices.

MY reputation.

And suddenly… I smiled.

Not because I was happy.

Because for the first time in years, I finally understood something.

Ethan had absolutely no idea who he was talking to.

He thought I was just his emotional little housewife carrying his baby.

He had no idea I knew every investor behind his company.

Every financial weakness.

Every secret deal hidden beneath his success.

And if I walked away?

His entire empire could collapse overnight.

Later that night, while Ethan slept peacefully beside me, I sat alone in the nursery rubbing my pregnant belly under the dim light.

Then I picked up my phone.

My hands trembled as I called someone I hadn’t spoken to in years.

The line connected immediately.

“Emily?” the voice said in shock.

I closed my eyes.

“It’s time.”

A long silence followed.

Then came the chilling reply.

“So… you’re finally ready to destroy him?”

I turned toward the bedroom where my husband slept without a care in the world.

And for the first time in five years…

I answered without hesitation.

“Yes.”

But what Ethan Carter didn’t know…

May you like
