Chapter 7 - The Gathering Storm

Back at the Red Hook safehouse, Marcus was waiting for me with a look of intense, white-knuckled anxiety. When I threw the cleaning bag onto the table, his eyes went wide.

"You actually did it," he whispered, staring at the three black leather ledgers and the silver flash drive.

"We have everything, Marcus," I said, collapsing onto the mattress, my body trembling with exhaustion and lingering pain. "The offshore accounts, the bribes, the physical evidence of his illegal dealings with the dock unions. And... the project files."

Marcus plugged the silver flash drive into his secure, encrypted laptop. The screen lit up with thousands of documents—emails, contract drafts, and audio transcriptions.

As Marcus scrolled through the files, his face grew pale, his jaw tightening with a deep, furious anger.

"This is bigger than money laundering, Evelyn," Marcus said, turning the screen toward me. "Julian wasn't just bribing local officials. He’s been funding a massive, illegal human-trafficking and smuggling network through his logistics company. He’s been using his charity hospitals as a front to move undocumented children across the borders."

I stared at the screen, my stomach turning. The man I had married, the man I had shared a bed with, was a monster of the worst kind. He had built his entire public image of generosity on the backs of exploited, terrified children.

"Forty-seven recordings," I murmured, my voice a cold whisper. "Combined with these ledgers... he cannot survive this, Marcus. Not even with his money. Not even with his connections."

"But we have to be careful, Evelyn," Marcus said, closing the laptop. "If we go to the local authorities, Julian’s contacts will bury it. If we go to the press, his PR team will tie us up in court until the files disappear. We need to go bigger. We need the federal government. We need the Eastern District of New York."

"I know the US Attorney for the Eastern District," I said, a faint memory of my old life resurfacing. "Arthur Vance. He was a close friend of my father before he passed. He’s one of the few men in the justice system Julian couldn't buy."

"Then we make the call," Marcus said, handing me the burner phone. "But we do it tonight. Before Julian realizes what’s on that drive and burns the tower down to destroy the evidence."

I took the phone, my fingers steady as I dialed the number. The storm was coming, and for the first time in three years, I was the one holding the lightning.
