Chapter 9 - The Siege

Julian’s eyes scanned the paper. As he read the chemical breakdown, the names of the compounds, and the toxicologist’s stark warning about long-term neurological damage, the color drained entirely from his face.
The grief that had paralyzed him for two years evaporated in a single, terrifying instant, replaced by a cold, blinding fury that made the air in the room feel like liquid ice.
He slowly looked up from the paper, his eyes locking onto Victoria.
"You..." Julian whispered, his voice vibrating with a dark, primal rage. "You poisoned my children?"
"Julian, listen to me—" Victoria backed away, reaching toward her open handbag on the table. "She fabricated that! She's trying to ruin us—"
"GET OUT OF MY HOUSE!" Julian screamed, a sound so loud it seemed to shake the very foundation of the mansion. He lunged forward, grabbing the stack of legal transfer documents and ripping them in half, hurling the shreds into Victoria’s face. "If I ever see your face near my boys again, I won't call the police. I will use every dollar I have to ensure you disappear into a federal prison for the rest of your natural life!"
Victoria backed toward the door, her composure entirely shattered. She glared at me with a hatred so intense it felt like a physical heat. "You ruined everything, you little bitch," she spat through clenched teeth. "They’re still broken! They’ll always be broken!"
She turned and sprinted down the hallway, the sharp clatter of her heels fading rapidly into the distance until the front door slammed shut.
Silence returned to the studio.
Julian fell to his knees on the wooden floorboards, surrounded by the ripped papers and the ghosts of his wife’s artwork. He buried his face in his hands, his broad shoulders shaking violently as two years of suppressed grief, guilt, and terror finally broke through his wall of ice.
I didn't offer a corporate speech. I simply sat down on the floor beside him, putting a firm hand on his shoulder, keeping him grounded just like I had done with his son three weeks ago.

"I failed them," Julian sobbed, the powerful billionaire reduced to a broken father. "I let her hurt them... I locked myself away while my boys were being tortured in their own home..."
"You were blind, not evil," I said softly. "Now you're awake. So go be their father."
