Chapter 7 - The Vance Dynasty

The name echoed in the quiet library like a gunshot.

Marcus Vance.

He was the black sheep of the family, a man who had been cast out of our logistics firm twenty years ago after my father discovered he was using our transport trucks to move black-market firearms across the Canadian border. He had disappeared into the underbelly of the city, and we had all assumed he had fled the country or died in some back-alley dispute.

But he hadn't fled. He had simply gone deeper into the shadows, building a criminal enterprise that used our own family’s legacy as its foundation.

"He came to me six months ago, Julian," my mother sobbed, wrapping her arms around her stomach as if she could hold her shattered family together. "He told me he had purchased Richard's outstanding debts from a group of Chinese investors. He said if I didn't help him convince Sarah to pay, he would destroy your company. He said he had enough evidence of Richard's financial crimes to drag the Vance name through the mud and ruin your IPO."

"So you cooperated with him," I said, the disgust in my voice thick.

"I was trying to protect you!" she cried. "I thought if Sarah paid the debt, Marcus would go away. I thought we could keep the family secrets buried! I didn't know... I didn't know he was using her to infiltrate your shipping lines."

"Where is he, Mother?" I demanded. "Where does he keep his operations?"

"The old ferry terminal," she whispered. "The one at Pier 48. He bought it through a shell company ten years ago. He uses the abandoned dry docks to store his cargo."

I turned and walked toward the door.

"Julian, wait!" my mother screamed, running after me into the foyer. "Don't go there! He’ll kill you! Let the police handle it!"

"The police can't go in there without a warrant, Mother, and by the time they get one, Sarah will be at the bottom of the bay," I said, opening the door. The cold, wet wind rushed in, plastering my hair to my face. "Stay here. If I don't call you by 6:00 a.m., call Agent Glenn and give her the recording of this conversation."

I didn't wait for her reply. I walked out into the dark, stormy night, the weight of my family’s sins pressing down on my shoulders like a lead weights.
