Chapter 8 - The Confrontation on the Dock

David moved with blinding speed, bringing his weapon up to target Julian, but before he could squeeze the trigger, two armed men stepped up behind Julian, aiming high-caliber rifles directly at David's chest.

"Drop it, Mercer!" Julian screamed, his voice wild and frantic. "Drop the gun or my men put five rounds through your heart right now!"

David paused, his eyes measuring the distance, calculating the lethal odds. He slowly lowered his weapon and let it drop onto the wet wooden floorboards.

"Kick it into the water," Julian ordered, his hands shaking noticeably on the grip of his pistol.

David complied, kicking his firearm off the edge into the dark lake below.

Julian stepped into the boathouse, his eyes locked onto the leather-bound journal clutched in my hands. "I knew it," Julian laughed bitterly, a hysterical edge to his voice. "I knew my father left something behind! He was always paranoid, always keeping records, always holding me back!"

"He wasn't holding you back, Julian," I said softly, taking a step forward, completely unbothered by the gun pointed at my chest. "He was trying to protect you. He died trying to keep Titan Holdings from turning you into a criminal."

"Shut up!" Julian shrieked, his face flushing dark red. "He was weak! You were both weak! You sat on billions of dollars in enterprise value and treated it like a local family business! Titan Holdings offered me real power! Global reach! Hundreds of millions of dollars in personal capital!"

"By poisoning your own father?" I asked, my voice dropping into a deep, echoing tone of pure condemnation. "By putting military-grade toxins in his medicine eight years ago? Did Titan do that, Julian, or did you?"

Julian’s eyes flickered with a sudden, agonizing flash of guilt, before hardening back into cold steel. "I didn't poison him! Titan told me it was a sedative! They said he would just be forced to step down due to medical incapacity! I didn't know he was going to die until it was over!"

"And what about me, Julian?" I demanded, pointing at my own chest. "This morning! In my office! Was that a sedative too? You walked up to my private coffee cart, looked into the camera, and poured enough Potassium Cyanide into my cup to kill a bull!"

Julian swallowed hard, his breathing coming in ragged, shallow gasps. "You... you forced my hand! You were going to block the Apex deal! You were going to expose my accounts! I had no choice!"

"You always had a choice!" a raspy, powerful voice echoed from the shoreline behind them.

Julian froze, his body going rigid.

Standing at the edge of the dock, wrapped in a heavy coat and supported by Sarah, was Evelyn. Her face was pale, but her eyes were burning with absolute clarity, free from the dark fog of the drugs that had held her captive for three years.

"Mother?" Julian whispered, his hands trembling violently as he turned his head toward the shore. "How... how are you walking? You're sick..."

"I was never sick, Julian," Evelyn said, tears streaming down her weathered cheeks as she looked at her only son. "You allowed those evil men to drug your own mother. You locked me away so I couldn't tell Charles what you did to your father."

"No... no, Mom, I did it to protect you!" Julian stammered, his rationalizations falling apart around him. "Titan threatened to kill you if I didn't cooperate! I put you in that facility to keep you safe!"

"You put me there to keep yourself rich!" Evelyn shouted, her voice echoing across the silent, misty lake. "Look at what you've become! You are a monster, Julian! You killed your father, you tried to kill your uncle, and you destroyed our family!"

Julian lowered his gun slightly, his chest heaving as tears finally spilled from his eyes. "It's too late... it's too late to go back, Mom. If I don't give Titan that ledger, they'll kill me. They'll hunt me down wherever I go."

"Then let them try," I said, taking another step toward him, extending my hand. "Give me the gun, Julian. Stand down. Take responsibility for what you've done. It is the only way you survive this day."

For a brief, agonizing moment, it looked as though Julian was going to break. The lost, terrified young boy inside him seemed to fight through the cold veneer of the corporate murderer. He looked at his mother, then at me, his hand loosening on the grip of the pistol.

Suddenly, a sharp CRACK echoed through the mountain air.

A high-velocity rifle bullet struck the floorboards inches from Julian's feet.

From the tree line above the cabin, a dark armored vehicle tore through the wooden fences, crashing down onto the lawn. Out stepped a tall man dressed in an expensive cashmere coat, flanked by four heavily armed private military contractors.

It was Victor Vance—the CEO of Titan Holdings, and Arthur Vance’s older brother.

"That's enough family drama," Victor Vance called out coldly, his voice amplified by a megaphone. "Julian, you incompetent fool! You failed to poison an old man, you lost his mother, and you let him lead you right to the evidence! Move out of the way so my men can finish this!"
