Chapter 8 - The Evidence in the Dark

Agent Vance plugged the silver drive into her secure, encrypted laptop.
A black screen appeared, followed by a prompt requesting a twenty-character decryption key.
"It's password-protected," Miller sighed, rubbing his face. "We'll have to send it to the federal cyber team in Quantico. It could take weeks to crack."
"Wait," I said, looking at the blinking cursor on the screen. "Mom left a sentence in her letter."
"What sentence?" Vance asked, pulling the original letter from her jacket pocket.
"She wrote: 'The stars always guide us home.'" I recalled, remembering the nights Mom would sit with me on our porch, pointing out constellations while holding the babies in her lap.
Agent Vance typed: T-H-E-S-T-A-R-S-A-L-W-A-Y-S-G-U-I-D-E-U-S-H-O-M-E and hit Enter.
The screen flashed green.
Files began opening instantly—thousands of financial spreadsheets, audio recordings, encrypted wire transfers, and video logs documenting twenty years of Sterling's global criminal empire, human trafficking rings, and public corruption.
"My God," Vance whispered, her eyes scrolling through the vast ocean of evidence. "This isn't just enough to arrest him. This dismantles his entire syndicate across six states."
Before anyone could celebrate, the heavy emergency lights in the hallway suddenly cut out.
The room plunged into absolute pitch darkness.
The steady hum of the incubators stuttered as the emergency generators kicked in with a low, vibrating groan.

Over the hospital intercom system, a cold, familiar voice echoed through the speaker:
"Attention, hospital staff. Power to the third floor has been cut. All emergency exits are sealed. Agent Vance, bring the girl and the drive to the main lobby in five minutes, or I detonate the natural gas line in the basement."
