Chapter 5 - The Trap Closes

The penthouse suite of the Mercer Tower was supposed to be an impenetrable fortress. Perched on the forty-fifth floor overlooking downtown Chicago, it featured bulletproof glass, private elevator access, biometric security doors, and a panoramic view of an empire that the family believed was invincible.

By the second week following the court hearing, it was a tomb.

With all corporate accounts frozen, federal agents swarming their offices, and their high-priced legal team resigning en masse after realizing the depth of the criminal liability, the Mercer family was completely cut off from the outside world. No investors would return their calls. No politicians would answer their texts. The loyal sycophants who had surrounded them for decades vanished like ghosts at sunrise.

And down on the thirty-second floor of a neutral corporate office building across town, I sat across a sleek mahogany conference table from Arthur Vance and two federal prosecutors, preparing for the final strike.

"The federal indictments are sealed until tomorrow morning," Lead Prosecutor Assistant U.S. Attorney Jennifer Hayes said, sliding a thick document across the table. "Once we execute the final sweep, Preston and Margaret Mercer will be taken into federal custody without bail due to extreme flight risk."

I looked over the document, tracing my finger along the signature line. My name—Evelyn Mercer—was listed as the primary cooperating witness whose detailed, flawless financial ledgers had provided the foundational evidence for the entire racketeering case.

"And the offshore assets in the Cayman Islands?" I asked.

"Frozen and successfully repatriated back to the state accounts," Jennifer Hayes smiled. "Thanks to the digital footprint you preserved on that flash drive, we tracked every single hidden account Margaret set up under dummy corporations. They don't have a single penny left to fund a defense, let alone bribe an official."

Arthur leaned back in his chair, looking at me with undisguised respect. "Evelyn, when this is all over, what are your plans? With your forensic instincts and attention to detail, you could easily write your own ticket anywhere in the financial sector."

"My only plan right now," I said softly, thinking of Lily sleeping soundly in her nursery back at the safe house, "is to rebuild a life where my daughter never has to look over her shoulder, and never has to wonder if she's valued for who she is, not what she owns."

"Well," Arthur said, gathering his papers. "Before you start building that new life, there is one final formality. Preston’s defense attorneys have requested an in-person settlement conference this afternoon. They want to discuss a plea deal regarding the division of marital assets and custody terms before the criminal trial begins."

I raised an eyebrow. "Preston wants to negotiate?"

"He's desperate," Jennifer Hayes added. "He thinks if he can convince you to sign a private settlement agreement, he might salvage some portion of his personal trust funds before the government seizes them completely."

I stood up, buttoning my blazer with absolute calm. "Then let's go meet my soon-to-be ex-husband. It's time to settle accounts."
