Chapter 10 - A New Year, A New Foundation

New Year's Eve arrived under a sky filled with clear, brilliant stars.
My home was filled with the warm sound of chatter and cooking smells. Julian was at the stove finishing a roast dinner, Mrs. Gable was sitting by the fire reading to Nora, and Mason was showing his mother how his new drawing tablet worked at the dining table.
Lydia sat beside her eldest son, listening attentively as he explained the digital brushes, smiling warmly at his enthusiasm. The tension that had plagued our family for half a decade had dissipated, replaced by a cautious, quiet sense of hope.
My physical recovery was nearly complete. The surgical stitches had healed, the pain was gone, and for the first time in years, the heavy weight of being the sole bearer of my family's burdens had been lifted from my shoulders.
At 11:55 PM, we gathered in the living room with glasses of sparkling cider. The TV screen showed the glowing crystal ball in Times Square, counting down the final minutes of a long, tumultuous year.
"A toast," Julian said, raising his glass. "To fresh starts, honest conversations, and real family."
We clinked our glasses together. Lydia looked over at me, her eyes filled with a quiet, enduring gratitude.
"Thank you, Caleb," she whispered as the crowd on TV began to count down from ten. "For not letting me ruin everything."
"You're welcome, Lydia," I smiled, wrapping an arm gently around her shoulder. "Happy New Year."

As the clock struck midnight and cheers filled the room, Mason, Eli, and Nora cheered, holding up their juice cups. Outside, fireworks flared across the winter night, illuminating the snow-covered landscape in brilliant flashes of gold, crimson, and green.
The storm had passed. The boundaries had been set, the foundation restored, and for the first time in memory, our family was finally standing on solid ground.
