Chapter 4 - The City Below

The drive into downtown Chicago on Friday morning was a journey through a landscape they had hoped never to see again. The Dan Ryan Expressway was a clogged, gray artery of steel and exhaust, the shimmering heat rising from the asphalt creating a distorted mirage of the city skyline. Caleb drove the company’s regular delivery van—a white Ford with the simple C.P. Logistics logo on the door—while Clara sat in the passenger seat, her blue sundress replaced by a sharp, tailored black blazer and gray trousers. She looked like a federal prosecutor; she felt like an executioner.

They parked in a public garage near the Daley Center, the air beneath the concrete decks smelling of damp earth and oil leaks. Caleb remained in the driver’s seat, his hand resting on the steering wheel, his eyes scanning the rearview mirrors with a practiced, lethal efficiency.

"I don't like you going into that building alone," Caleb said as Clara reached for the door handle.

"I'm not alone," she said, tapping her earpiece, which was connected to a live audio bridge running through her laptop on the van’s dashboard. "You can hear every word. And Roman is outside the building with Silvano. If Marcus Thorne tries to run, he won't make it to the subway station."

She stepped out of the van, her heels clicking with a sharp, metallic ring against the concrete floor. The elevator ride up to the fourth floor of the administration building was slow, the car filled with county employees and citizens holding parking tickets and property deeds. It was a world of mundane bureaucracy—the exact world Clara had fought so hard to join, yet here she was, using it as a battleground.

She found Marcus Thorne at a cubicle near the back of the records division. He was a small, balding man in his late fifties, his short-sleeved blue dress tie slightly askew, a half-eaten turkey sandwich resting on a paper plate next to his keyboard. He didn't look like a man who was helping to rebuild an international smuggling empire; he looked like a man who was counting the days until his pension cleared.

Clara didn't wait for him to look up. She stepped into the cubicle, pulled a spare rolling chair from an empty desk, and sat down directly across from him, blocking his view of the main aisle. She placed a thick manila folder on top of his keyboard, covering his screen.

"Mr. Thorne," Clara said, her voice dropping into a low, professional whisper that carried the distinct chill of an ice sheet. "My name is Clara Price. I'm the Chief Financial Executor for Callahan & Price Logistics. We need to talk about the mirror server you're running on terminal forty-two."

Thorne froze, his hand stopping midway to his mouth with a piece of turkey. His eyes dilated, his skin turning a sickly, pale yellow under the fluorescent lights. "I... I don't know what you're talking about, lady. This is a secure government facility. You can't just come in here—"

"The Rosemont bank branch on River Road," Clara interrupted, her voice unhurried and lethal. "The automated teller machine takes your deposits at exactly 5:15 PM every Friday. The serial numbers on the hundred-dollar bills match a sequence that originated from a commercial account held by a logistics shell company in Montreal called Laurentian Transit. That company is owned by Thomas Vance."

Thorne dropped the sandwich, his breath coming in short, shallow gasps. He looked around the room, his eyes darting toward the security guards stationed near the entrance.

"Don't look at them," Clara warned gently, leaning forward until she could see her own reflection in his glasses. "My husband is downstairs in a delivery van. My brother-in-law is waiting at the exit. If I walk out of this building without the administrative passwords for your mirror server, the federal magistrate will have a warrant for your arrest before your lunch hour is over. Your pension will be gone, your house in Oak Lawn will be seized under the RICO act, and Thomas Vance will ensure you don't survive your first week in Cook County Jail."
