Chapter 4 - Shadows at the Gate

Two weeks passed, transformed by a quiet, domestic rhythm that felt entirely foreign to my cold existence.

Claire moved permanently into the East Wing suites with Owen. She officially resigned as housekeeper, though she stubbornly insisted on arranging my study and making my morning tea because she claimed Margaret made it "too bitter."

For the first time in my adult life, I found myself rushing back to the estate after business meetings. I found myself sitting in the library while Claire read books aloud, or watching Owen learn to walk along the polished corridors. The heavy shadow of my past was still there, but Claire’s presence felt like a warm lantern cut into the deep dark.

However, in my world, peace is an illusion that never lasts.

It was 2:15 AM on a freezing Tuesday when the silent alarm on my bedside console flashed red.

I woke instantly, my instincts honed by years of surviving assassination attempts. I reached under my pillow, pulling out my customized semi-automatic pistol, and racked the slide in one smooth motion.

I pulled myself into my wheelchair with practiced speed, sliding into the hallway just as Dominic ran up the stairs, his weapon drawn.

"Boss!" Dominic hissed in a whisper. "We have a perimeter breach on the west lawn. Three thermal signatures moving toward the East Wing."

My heart stopped. The East Wing.

"Claire," I gritted out. "Where are the perimeter guards?"

"Taken out with suppressed darts," Dominic said grimly. "This is professional. It's Vanezzi's mercenary team."

"Get the men to the lower level," I ordered, my voice turning to absolute ice. "I’m going to Claire."

I didn't wait for Dominic. I wheeled myself at top speed down the wide carpeted hallway toward the East Wing.

When I reached Claire’s suite, the door was slightly ajar.

Inside, the room was dark except for the moonlight streaming through the shattered glass of the balcony doors. A tall man in black tactical gear was standing over Claire’s bed, holding a suppressed pistol aimed at her chest. Claire was sitting up, clutching Owen frantically against her body, her face white with horror.

"Don't scream, sweetheart," the mercenary growled. "Don Vanezzi wants you alive to make Moretti crawl."

"He won't crawl for anyone," I said from the doorway.

The mercenary spun around, raising his weapon toward me.

THWACK.

I didn't hesitate. I fired two rapid shots straight through his chest. The mercenary collapsed onto the hardwood floor with a heavy thud, his weapon sliding across the rug.

"Adrian!" Claire sobbed, tears spilling down her face as she squeezed Owen tightly.

Before I could reach her, a second mercenary lunged from behind the curtain, tackling my wheelchair from the side. The chair overturned, throwing me heavily onto the floor. My pistol clattered away under the bed.

The mercenary drew a combat knife, pinning my upper body down, his face twisted in a murderous sneer. "End of the line, Moretti!"

I grabbed his wrist with both hands, struggling against his weight. My legs were useless, but my upper body had been built through twenty years of relentless training. I twisted his arm back with all my strength, driving his hand toward the floor.

Suddenly, a heavy bronze floor lamp smashed directly across the back of the mercenary's head.

CRACK!

The man groaned, his grip slipping as he collapsed sideways onto the floor.

Claire stood over him, holding the broken metal base of the lamp, her hands shaking uncontrollably, her eyes wide with fierce, motherly fury.

I didn't waste a second. I pulled myself forward, grabbed the mercenary’s fallen knife, and drove it into his shoulder, neutralizing him instantly.

Dominic and three guards rushed into the room seconds later, weapons raised, taking control of the scene.

I ignored the blood on my hands. I dragged myself onto my arms, sitting against the frame of the bed, looking up at Claire.

"Claire... are you hurt?" I gasped, my chest heaving.

Claire dropped the broken lamp. She fell to her knees in front of me, throwing her arms around my neck, sobbing hysterically into my shoulder while Owen cried softly between us.

"I thought they were going to kill you," she sobbed, holding me so tightly I could barely breathe. "I thought you were dead!"

May you like

I wrapped my arms around her and Owen, pulling them close against my chest, burying my face in her soft hair.

"I'm not going anywhere, Claire," I whispered, the cold mafia boss completely gone, replaced by a man who realized he would burn the entire world to keep this woman safe. "I promise you. I'm not going anywhere."
