CHAPTER 2 — THE WOMAN THEY COULDN’T SILENCE
Light hit me like broken glass.
Pain exploded through my skull.
But I was awake.
Marcus froze.
Victoria stepped back instantly.
The nurse dropped her clipboard.
And Leo—
Leo ran to me.
“Mom!” he cried.
My throat burned.
But I managed one word.
“Leo…”
His face collapsed with relief.
Marcus recovered first.
“Call neurology,” he snapped at the nurse. “She’s disoriented.”
Disoriented.
That was his word for truth.
Victoria forced a smile.
“Valerie,” she said softly, “you’re safe. You’re just confused.”
I looked at her.
Really looked.
And saw it.
Not sisterhood.
Not concern.
Calculation.
Always calculation.
My voice was barely a whisper.
“My brakes…”
Silence.
A flicker in Marcus’s eyes.
Too fast.
Too controlled.
“The police already investigated,” he said calmly. “It was an accident.”
Lie.
I could feel it now.
Clearly.
I tried to sit up.
Pain shot through my body.
But I did it anyway.
Because something stronger than pain had finally returned.
Awareness.
“No,” I whispered.
Marcus stepped closer.
“You need to rest.”
“No,” I repeated louder.
Leo grabbed my hand.
“Mom, I heard them,” he said urgently. “They said they cut something in your car.”
The room froze.
Even Victoria stopped breathing.
That was the moment everything cracked.
Marcus turned slowly toward Leo.
“Enough.”
But Leo didn’t stop.
“They said if she survived, everything would fall apart.”
My vision sharpened.
Suddenly every detail mattered.
Victoria’s trembling hands.
Marcus’s perfect calm.
The nurse quietly reaching for the emergency button.
I understood.
They weren’t just stealing my life.
They were trying to erase it cleanly.
I looked at Marcus.
“You tried to kill me,” I said.
He exhaled slowly.
Like I was exhausting him.
“You’re confused.”
“No,” I said again.
Stronger this time.
“I’m awake.”
That word changed everything.
Because Marcus finally stopped pretending.
His expression hardened.
Victoria stepped behind him.
And I saw it.
The decision.
“They’re going to sedate her again,” I whispered to Leo.
His eyes widened.
“No.”
But Marcus signaled the nurse.
“Increase the dosage.”
The nurse hesitated.
Something inside her finally snapped.
“I won’t,” she said.
Silence.
Marcus turned.
“What?”
She looked at me.
Then at Leo.
Then at Marcus.
And pressed the emergency call button instead.
“Security,” she said. “Room 614.”
Everything exploded after that.
Footsteps.
Voices.
Chaos.
Marcus grabbed Leo’s arm.
But I moved.
For the first time.
I moved.
Not fully.
Not easily.
But enough.
“Don’t touch him,” I whispered.
And the monitor screamed louder.
