Chapter 3 - The Paper Trail

Vanessa’s breath hitched again. Her posture, which had briefly tried to recover its victimized elegance, stiffened into defensive terror.

Arthur opened his leather briefcase, pulled out a bright yellow document folder, and laid it neatly on the glass coffee table between the velvet armchairs.

"Over the past six months," Daniel spoke, pulling off his black leather gloves and dropping them beside the folder, "I noticed strange discrepancies in the maintenance budgets for our country estate in Vermont and the offshore art holdings in Geneva. At first, I assumed my accountants were simply disorganized."

"Daniel, I don't know anything about accounting!" Vanessa insisted quickly, crossing her arms defensively. "You know I leave all business matters to your corporate managers! I only use the household allowance you gave me!"

"The household allowance was fifty thousand dollars a month, Vanessa," Daniel said coldly. "A generous sum for flower arrangements and personal dresses. But according to these bank records, over $2.4 million was wire-transferred out of the estate’s secondary liquidity account between March and August."

Arthur stepped forward, pulling three single-page bank statements from the folder.

"The destination account belongs to a private shell corporation registered in the Cayman Islands called Aura Luxe Investments," Arthur explained in his monotone, professional voice. "The sole registered director of Aura Luxe Investments is Mr. Julian Sterling."

At the mention of that name, Vanessa’s mask cracked wide open. A look of sheer, panicked fury flushed across her features.

"Julian Sterling..." Daniel repeated the name slowly, feeling the foul taste of it on his tongue. "Your ex-fiancé. The man you swore you had cut all ties with before I married you two years ago."

"Julian was blackmailing me!" Vanessa shrieked, dropping all pretense of innocence. She buried her face in her hands, her shoulders shaking with dramatic sobs. "He had photographs from my youth! He threatened to publish them and ruin your reputation! I only transferred that money to protect you, Daniel! To protect our family name!"

Daniel let out a low, dry laugh that had no humor in it whatsoever.

"You really think I'm still the foolish, lonely man who fell for your comforting words after Eleanor died, don't you?" Daniel said, taking a step toward her. "Arthur intercepted Julian Sterling at the O'Hare international terminal three hours ago. He was carrying a one-way ticket to Belize, a fake passport, and three wire receipts signed personally by you from your private laptop inside this house."

Vanessa’s sobbing stopped instantly. She lowered her hands, her eyes cold and sharp as needles.

"Julian sang like a canary the moment federal agents pulled him into the security office," Daniel continued. "You weren't being blackmailed, Vanessa. You two were planning to siphon six million dollars from Lily's inheritance trust over the next year before staging a quiet divorce in Paris."

Vanessa stood in the middle of the empty, magnificent room, surrounded by white roses and half-empty champagne glasses, entirely exposed.

"So what now?" she hissed, her voice dropping the sweet, melodic tone she had used for two years, revealing the hard, bitter edge underneath. "Are you calling the police, Daniel? Are you going to throw your wife in prison? Think of the headlines! Think of what it will do to Whitmore Enterprises' stock!"

"I don't care about the stock, Vanessa," Daniel said softly. "I care about my daughter. And as for the police... they are already waiting outside the main gates."
