Chapter 6 - The Spider's Web

By 9:00 AM, the storm had cleared, leaving a blinding blue sky over a world buried under twelve inches of fresh white snow.
Inside the private study at the Whitmore Estate, Gavin sat behind his mahogany desk surrounded by three people: Leo Vance, Arthur Vance (Gavin's chief legal strategist), and Sarah Chen.
On the large wall-mounted monitor, a complex organizational chart showed the corporate web of Apex Horizon Custodial Services and its parent company, Vance Global Maritime.
"Julian Vance filed an emergency federal habeas corpus petition two hours ago," Arthur Vance reported, tapping his tablet screen. "He's claiming that Gavin Whitmore kidnapped a state ward—Lily Chen—and broke into a private maritime facility at Pier 42."
"Who's the judge on the warrant?" Gavin asked calmly, taking a sip of black coffee.
"Federal Judge Richard Sterling," Arthur replied grimly. "Sterling received forty thousand dollars in campaign contributions from Apex Horizon's legal PAC last year. He's signed an immediate order demanding the production of the child at the Federal Courthouse in Lower Manhattan by 2:00 PM today."
"And if we don't produce her?"
"Then federal marshals will be dispatched to this estate with an arrest warrant for you, Gavin, on charges of interference with state custody and multi-jurisdictional kidnapping."
Sarah clutched her hands tightly in her lap, her face turning pale again. "Gavin, you can't go to prison for us! Let me go to the courthouse. I have the chemical ledgers—I can tell the judge what they did!"
"If you walk into that courthouse alone, Sarah," Leo interrupted gently, "Sterling will have you remanded to an evaluation facility before you can open your mouth. Julian Vance controls the private security transport company that handles federal court holding cells in this district. You'll never reach a witness stand."
Gavin stood up from his chair, walked over to the floor-to-ceiling window overlooking the snow-covered valley, and looked out toward the distant skyline of Manhattan.
"They think this is a custody fight," Gavin said slowly. "They think they can use a compromised federal judge to force us onto defensive ground."
He turned back to face the room, his eyes sharp and focused.
"Leo, where are the chemical samples Sarah pulled from the barrels at Pier 42?"
"In a secure cryogenic container at the State University research lab in Stony Brook," Leo answered. "Analyzed, verified, and stamped by three independent toxicologists three hours ago."
"And the video footage from the camera inside the white sprinter van?"
"Audio and video fully recovered," Leo smiled faintly. "Includes the clear recording of Apex guard Miller telling Sarah that her daughter was being held in a private facility until she signed over her late husband's research rights."
Gavin turned to Arthur Vance. "Call the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York. Not his office—his personal cell phone."
Arthur blinked in surprise. "District Attorney Harrison? Gavin, Harrison is running for Governor next year. He doesn't like getting dragged into messy custody disputes."
"Tell Harrison that Gavin Whitmore has thirty million dollars worth of illegal precursor chemical shipments seized on federal maritime waters, backed by video evidence of corporate human trafficking operating right under his nose in Brooklyn," Gavin instructed, his voice ringing like iron. "Tell him if he meets me at the Federal Courthouse at 1:30 PM with a federal grand jury indictment, he can have the press conference on the courthouse steps five minutes before the six o'clock news."
Arthur slowly smiled, nodding his head. "Harrison will jump over his own desk to get to that podium."

Gavin walked over to Sarah, resting a hand on her shoulder.
"Put on your coat, Sarah," Gavin said gently. "We're going to court."
