Chapter 9 - The Reckoning

The aftermath of the live stress test was swift, absolute, and devastating for Jonathan’s enemies.

Within two hours of the broadcast, Bennett Medical stock didn't just recover—it surged by twenty-four percent, reaching an all-time high as orders for the Mark-X Vanguard prototype poured in from hospital networks and military rehabilitation centers across Europe and North America.

At 3:00 PM, four armed federal marshals and two agents from the Securities and Exchange Commission entered the executive boardroom on the top floor of the Boston headquarters.

Harrison Vance was sitting alone at the mahogany table, frantically trying to delete files from his encrypted laptop.

"Harrison Vance?" the lead marshal announced, stepping into the room with handcuffs drawn.

Harrison looked up, his face devoid of all color. "I... I am a senior board member of this corporation! You have no right—"

"You are under arrest for federal securities fraud, corporate espionage, and criminal conspiracy," the marshal interrupted coldly, pulling Harrison’s hands behind his back and clicking the steel cuffs into place. "Your offshore banking records in the Cayman Islands were turned over to the District Attorney an hour ago by Daniel Price."

Harrison was led out through the main lobby in handcuffs, right past thirty news cameras capturing every second of his public downfall.

Downstairs in the private executive suite, Edward Sterling and his brother Richard were formally served with a civil lawsuit seeking $150 million in damages for corporate sabotage and fraud, while federal authorities seized BioDynamic Solutions' intellectual property assets pending trial.

Inside Jonathan’s primary office, the rain washed over the large glass windows overlooking the Charles River.

Jonathan sat behind his desk, holding a warm cup of coffee. Sitting across from him were Annie, Dr. Marcus Vance, and Daniel Price.

"The board voted unanimously ten minutes ago," Daniel reported with a broad smile. "Harrison Vance has been formally removed from the Board of Directors. His shares have been placed into a voting trust controlled entirely by you, Mr. Bennett."

"And the FDA?" Jonathan asked.

"The FDA just issued an expedited fast-track approval for the Mark-X Vanguard system," Marcus added triumphantly. "Full production begins next month at the Raleigh plant."

Jonathan set his cup down, looking across the desk at Annie. She was scrolling through her tablet, reviewing the incoming requests from low-income clinics across the country.

"Annie," Jonathan said softly.

She looked up. "Yes, Mr. Bennett?"

"I have a proposal for you," Jonathan said, leaning forward. "The board has approved the creation of the Bennett Foundation for Biomechanical Innovation—an independent research institution funded by ten percent of all Mark-X global profits. Its sole mission will be providing free, custom micro-hydraulic prosthetics to children, orphans, and working-class families across the world."

Annie’s eyes widened. "A foundation... dedicated entirely to zero-cost mobility access?"

"Yes," Jonathan smiled gently. "And we need a President to run it."

Annie gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. "Mr. Bennett... I'm nineteen! I haven't even finished my bachelor's degree yet!"

"You're enrolled in the night engineering program at MIT starting this September," Jonathan countered with a twinkle in his eye. "Marcus and I have already signed your academic sponsorship. You will manage the foundation while completing your degree. And I can think of no one else in the world I would trust with that responsibility."

May you like

Tears of pure, overwhelming joy filled Annie’s eyes. She looked at Daniel, at Marcus, and finally at Jonathan—the man who had seen her worth when she was sitting on a folding chair in a dingy storage room.

"Mr. Bennett," Annie whispered, her voice rich with deep emotion. "It would be the honor of my life."
