Chapter 9 - The Thanksgiving Table

On Thanksgiving Day, the grand dining room of the Whitaker Estate was prepared for a special dinner.
In the past, Julian had spent Thanksgiving alone, or attending formal corporate galas in New York or London.
This year, the long mahogany table was set for twenty people.
Sitting around the table were Arthur Bell, Ellie Mercer, Ryan Mercer, the estate cooking staff, the housekeepers, the maintenance technicians, and their families.
Julian stood at the head of the table, holding a glass of sparkling cider.
The room went quiet as everyone looked up at the man whose name was on the gate outside.
"Thank you all for being here today," Julian said, his voice resonant and filled with genuine emotion. "For twelve years, I thought this house was defined by its architecture, its art, and its value on a balance sheet."
He looked down the table—at Arthur, at the cooks, and finally at Ellie sitting near the center, holding a glass and smiling up at him.
"I was wrong," Julian said. "A house is just stone and steel. What makes it a home is the heart, the sweat, and the dignity of the people who live and work inside it."
He raised his glass high.
"To the team that keeps this place standing," Julian toasted. "And to never taking the people beneath our roof for granted again."
"To the team!" the room echoed in a chorus of joyous voices.
As the laughter and conversation erupted around the table, Arthur Bell leaned over to Ellie, clinking his glass against hers.
"Not bad for a girl who couldn't get a locking pin to hold," Arthur whispered with a wink.

Ellie laughed—a clear, beautiful sound that echoed through the high ceilings of the estate.
"Betty was just waiting for the right boss, Arthur," she replied.
