Chapter 6 - The Gathering Storm

For the next three days, I did not leave Clare’s bedside.

I slept in the chair beside her, held her hand while the medical team administered therapies to flush the lingering heavy metals from her kidneys, and personally fed her broth whenever she was strong enough to sit up.

The cold, distant tyrant was gone. In his place was a man obsessed with his wife's survival.

The estate staff who came to deliver updates were shocked by the transformation. I didn't yell. I didn't issue barked commands. But beneath my quiet devotion to Clare lay a dark, calculating vortex of vengeance that was simply waiting for the right moment to unleash itself.

On the fourth morning, Clare was sitting up in bed, color finally returning to her cheeks. She was dressed in a soft silk robe I had brought from home, resting her head against a stack of pillows while watching the sunlight filter through the window.

"Julian," she said softly, reaching out to touch my hand as I peeled an apple for her.

"Yes, my love?" I asked, dropping the knife instantly.

"Lorenzo has been waiting outside the door for two hours," she said, her blue eyes clear and perceptive. "You need to talk to him."

I hesitated. "I don't care about business right now, Clare."

"It's not business, is it?" she asked gently, her thumb tracing the knuckles of my hand. "It's about the person who did this to me."

I lowered my eyes, unable to hide the truth from her any longer. "Victor Moretti paid my assistant to poison your tea. He wanted to break me by destroying you."

Clare took a slow, deep breath. A shadow of pain crossed her face, but she didn't cry. The fragile girl who had collapsed on the Persian rug was gone; in her eyes was a quiet, resilient strength forged in the fire of survival.

"I don't want you to die for me, Julian," she said softly, holding my hand tightly. "I fought so hard to come back to you. Don't go out there and get yourself killed."

I leaned forward, pressing my lips to her forehead. "Moretti struck at the heart of my life, Clare. If I don't eliminate him, he will try again. He will target you, target our future. I am going to end this war once and for all, so we can finally walk away."

She looked into my eyes, seeing the absolute certainty in my gaze. She knew there was no stopping a man protecting his home.

"Promise me you'll come back," she whispered. "Promise me you won't leave me alone again."

"I swear on my life," I promised. "I will be back before sunrise."

I stepped out into the hallway, where Lorenzo and Marco were waiting with six heavy tactical cases.

"Is everything prepared?" I asked, my voice instantly shifting back into the sharp, lethal register of a supreme commander.

"Moretti’s private estate in Boston is locked down," Lorenzo reported, handing me a tactical vest. "He knows Daniel failed. He’s brought in thirty mercenaries from the northern territory. He expects an attack."

"Good," I said, strapping the Kevlar vest across my chest and checking the weight of my custom sidearms. "I want him expecting an attack. I want him sitting in his fortress, waiting, terrified of every shadow."

"What are the orders, Boss?" Marco asked, racking the slide of his shotgun.

I pulled on my black leather gloves, my eyes cold and pitiless as night.

"Leave no one standing," I commanded. "Except Victor Moretti. I want him alive when I arrive."
