Chapter 3 - The Penthouse Agreement

By midnight, the noise of the reception had finally faded into the cool, quiet dark of the Manhattan skyline.

A sleek black Maybach dropped us off at the private entrance of a luxury high-rise overlooking Central Park. The elevator shot up quietly to the top floor, opening directly into Sebastian’s penthouse—a breathtaking space of floor-to-ceiling glass, dark wood, white marble, and warm, ambient lighting.

I stood near the center of the living room, holding my heavy lace train in one hand, suddenly feeling the full, overwhelming weight of the last twelve hours hit me all at once.

I was married. To a billionaire. Who I barely knew.

Sebastian hung his charcoal suit jacket over the back of a leather armchair, unbuttoned his top two shirt buttons, and walked over to a wet bar. He poured two glasses of sparkling mineral water and walked back over to me, handing me one.

“Drink this,” he said gently. “You’ve had a crazy day.”

“That is the understatement of the century,” I murmured, taking a sip of the cold water. The cool liquid refreshed my parched throat.

Sebastian sat down on the long velvet sofa, leaning back comfortably, looking up at me with an unreadable expression.

“We need to talk about the business side of what we just did, Victoria,” he said calmly.

I tightened my grip on the glass, taking a seat on the armchair across from him. “I’m listening.”

“First,” Sebastian began, crossing one leg over the other, “what happened today was not a joke. Legally, you are my wife. In the eyes of the media, the public, and Wall Street, we are a newly married couple.”

“I understand,” I nodded. “I know who you are, Sebastian. Your company’s stock price is going to be affected by this.”

“It already has,” Sebastian smiled faintly, pulling his phone from his pocket and showing me a news alert.

The headline read: STERLING CAPITAL CEO MARRIES LAWYER VICTORIA VANCE IN SHOCKING PLAZA CEREMONY AFTER ALTAR BETRAYAL.

Underneath the headline was a video of us kissing at the altar, which had already gathered three million views on social media. The commentary was overwhelmingly positive, framing me as a heroine who traded down a cheating ex for a titan of industry.

“The board is delighted,” Sebastian said, putting his phone away. “The narrative is incredible. But more importantly, I want to make sure you are protected.”

He reached into a leather briefcase sitting on the coffee table and pulled out a clean, bound document.

“I had my personal attorney draft this up while we were at the reception,” Sebastian explained, sliding the paper across the marble table toward me. “It is a Post-Nuptial Agreement.”

My heart sank slightly. “A pre-nup alternative?”

“Read it before you judge it,” he said gently.

I picked up the document and flipped through the pages. As I read, my eyes widened in complete disbelief.

The agreement did not strip me of rights—it granted them.

Under the terms of the contract, Sebastian was transferring full ownership of a five-million-dollar brownstone in the West Village directly into my name, completely free of mortgage. Additionally, I was granted a seat on the board of his charitable foundation, a unlimited corporate expense account, and a guaranteed fifty-million-dollar settlement in the event that he ever breached our marital trust or initiated a divorce without my consent.

In return, the contract simply required that we remain legally married for at least one full year, attend high-profile public events together as a couple, and maintain a united front against any media scrutiny.

I looked up from the pages, completely stunned. “Sebastian... this is insane. You’re giving me millions of dollars and a house just for agreeing to stay married to you for a year?”

Sebastian leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees, his gray eyes piercing into mine with absolute sincerity.

“Victoria, two years ago, I asked you to dinner because I saw a woman who was brilliant, breathtakingly beautiful, and utterly fiercely loyal,” he said, his voice dropping into a low, intimate register. “I watched you spend the last two years being diminished by a mediocre man and a selfish family who didn't appreciate your worth. Today, you stood up in front of two hundred people and reclaimed your power.”

He reached across the table, gently placing his hand over mine.

“I am not giving you these things as a bribe,” Sebastian continued softly. “I am giving them to you as leverage. I want you to know that you never have to depend on anyone else for security ever again. You are my wife now. And as long as you wear my ring, no one in this city will ever look down on you again.”

Tears prickled at the corners of my eyes, but for the first time today, they weren't tears of hurt. They were tears of profound, overwhelming relief.

“And what about... us?” I asked softly, looking down at our joined hands. “In terms of living arrangements?”

Sebastian smiled warmly, standing up from the couch.

“This penthouse has six bedrooms, Victoria,” he said respectfully. “The master suite on the east wing is yours. I will take the west wing. We will take this one day at a time, at whatever pace you are comfortable with. I am your husband, your ally, and your shelter. Nothing more unless you decide otherwise.”

He leaned down, pressed a soft, lingering kiss to the back of my knuckles, and smiled.

“Get some rest, Mrs. Sterling. Tomorrow, the real fun begins.”
