Chapter 8 - The Reunion of Light

The sun was setting over the Hudson Valley, painting the sky in brilliant hues of violet, orange, and soft pink.

At Marcus Vance’s estate, the garden was quiet, filled with the scent of blooming jasmine and wet pine.

In the living room, a fire crackled warmly in the stone hearth.

Juniper sat on the floor, holding a cup of warm cocoa with extra marshmallows. Her eyes were wide, fixed on the doorway.

Ellis walked into the room first. He looked tired, bruised, but his face carried a lightness that hadn't been there in years.

"Juniper," Ellis said gently, kneeling beside her. "I have someone I want you to meet."

He stepped aside.

Willow walked through the door. She wore a soft cream-colored sweater, her hair washed, dried, and brushed back from her face, revealing the warm, loving smile that had been buried under eighteen months of darkness.

Juniper dropped her cocoa cup onto the rug.

She stood up slowly, her small hands trembling at her sides. She stared at Willow, her blue eyes brimming with tears, unable to comprehend the miracle standing before her.

"Mommy...?" Juniper whispered, her voice barely audible over the crackle of the fire.

Willow dropped to her knees, opening her arms wide, tears streaming down her face without restraint.

"Oh, my sweet girl..." Willow sobbed. "My beautiful, brave little girl..."

Juniper didn't hesitate. She threw herself across the room, hurling her small body into Willow's open arms with a desperate, joyful scream.

"MOMMY!"

They crashed onto the rug together, Willow wrapping her arms around her daughter, pulling her close, burying her face in Juniper's dark hair, kissing her cheeks, her forehead, her small hands.

"I missed you so much!" Juniper wept, her little fingers clutching Willow's sweater as if she would disappear if she let go. "I drew pictures of you every day! Daddy said you were in heaven, but I knew you were coming back!"

"I am here, baby," Willow wept, holding her daughter tight against her beating heart. "Mommy is here. I am never, ever going to leave you again."

Ellis dropped to his knees beside them, throwing his broad arms around both of his girls, pulling them into a tight, unbreakable circle.

For long minutes, no one spoke. The only sound in the room was the crackle of the fire and the shared, joyful weeping of a family that had survived the impossible.
