Chapter 7 - A New Foundation

Back at the Chestnut Hill estate, the transformation was complete. The house no longer felt like a cold fortress of stone and armed guards; it had become a genuine home.
In the grand kitchen, Clara Carter stood by the marble counter, arranging a fresh batch of homemade lemon tarts on a porcelain platter. Her health had fully returned, her cheeks carrying a healthy, natural glow, and the lingering cough that had once threatened her life was nothing more than a distant memory.
Emma sat at the kitchen island, diligently working on her homework with a newly sharpened pencil, her miniature apron neatly tied around her waist.
“Mom,” Emma asked, looking up from her arithmetic book, her big blue-gray eyes bright with excitement. “Can Mr. Blackwood come to my school assembly tomorrow? They’re giving out certificates for the reading marathon, and I want him to sit in the front row.”
Clara paused, a soft smile spreading across her face. “You’ll have to ask him yourself, sweetie. He has a very busy schedule with his construction projects.”
“He always has time for me,” Emma declared with absolute childish confidence.
At that exact moment, the heavy oak doors of the foyer clicked open, and heavy footsteps echoed across the polished hardwood floor. Lucas walked into the kitchen, loosening his silk tie as he unbuttoned the top button of his white shirt.
Emma didn't wait. She abandoned her arithmetic book, jumped off the stool, and ran across the kitchen, wrapping her arms tightly around Lucas’s waist.
Lucas instantly dropped his briefcase, bending down to scoop her up with practiced ease, lifting her into the air as she giggled.
“Careful, little captain,” Lucas chuckled, a deep, resonant sound that only Clara and Emma ever heard. “You’re getting heavier every week. Are you eating all your vegetables, or just the chocolate chip cookies?”
“I ate all my broccoli!” Emma insisted proudly, resting her chin on his shoulder. “And Mr. Blackwood, I have a very important question.”
“Shoot.”
“Tomorrow at two o’clock, my school is having a reading assembly in the gymnasium. Mom says you’re too busy, but I told her you’re the boss of everything so you can make your own rules.”
Lucas looked past Emma’s small shoulder, catching Clara’s amused and slightly apologetic gaze across the kitchen counter. He looked back down into Emma’s hopeful, wide eyes. The ruthless underworld boss who commanded thousands of men and negotiated multi-million-dollar real estate empires melted in an instant.
“Well,” Lucas said with mock seriousness, pretending to ponder the calendar in his head. “The entire construction industry might collapse if I take two hours off in the middle of the afternoon.”
Emma’s smile falter slightly. “Oh…”
May you like
“However,” Lucas continued with a sudden grin, “I think I can manage a royal pardon for my schedule. I’ll be sitting in the front row, right beside your mom.”
Emma squealed with delight, throwing her arms around his neck and nearly knocking off his collar. Clara watched them, her heart swelling with a deep, quiet gratitude that words could never fully capture.
