Chapter 6 - The Harbor Ambush

Pier 42 was a dark, cavernous maze of stacked shipping containers, rusting cranes, and murky seawater sloshing against concrete pillars. Heavy rain swept across the harbor in sheet-like gusts, obscuring visibility and drowning out sound.

Through night-vision binoculars, I observed the dock. Twenty men in heavy winter coats were moving massive wooden crates onto a panamanian-flagged cargo vessel. Among them was Viktor Petrov himself—a stout, silver-haired Russian with a thick beard, standing beside Don Russo's top lieutenant, a man named Corrado.

"They're double-checking the manifest," Vincent whispered beside me from our vantage point inside an abandoned control tower. "If we hit them now, we catch both factions off guard."

"Wait until the fuel truck arrives," I instructed calmly. "We cut off their exit strategy first."

Two minutes later, a massive silver fuel tanker pulled up to the pier entrance, blocking the primary road out.

"Now," I commanded into my headset. "Execute."

A sniper round from our position high above shattered the front tires of the fuel tanker with a deafening explosion. Seconds later, flashbang grenades rained down onto the pier floor, blinding Petrov's security force with disorienting bursts of white light and thunderous booms.

Chaos erupted.

Petrov's men began firing wildly into the rain and darkness, unsure of where the attack was coming from.

"Russo set us up!" Petrov screamed in Russian, pulling his weapon and pointing it at Corrado. "He brought Vance's men here!"

"Are you insane?!" Corrado shouted back, diving behind a container as bullets whistled overhead. "Russo didn't do this! It’s Vance!"

My strike teams moved through the container rows like shadows, executing synchronized non-lethal and lethal takedowns, neutralizing Petrov's perimeter within minutes.

I stepped down from the metal staircase into the center of the pier, my weapon drawn, flanked by Vincent and six men.

"Petrov!" I shouted over the sound of wind and rain. "Your business in this city is over!"

Petrov spun around, holding Corrado in front of him as a human shield. "Vance! You foolish American! You think you can destroy my network for a single phone call?"

"I'm not destroying your network because of a phone call, Viktor," I said, advancing through the rain. "I'm destroying it because you allied with Russo. And Russo threatened my family."

"They aren't your family!" Petrov spat. "It's a broken woman and a worthless child!"

That single sentence ended any possibility of mercy.

I fired three lightning-fast shots. The first struck Petrov's shoulder, forcing him to drop Corrado. The second shattered his knee, dropping him to the wet asphalt. The third tore through the control box of the heavy crane above him, dropping a massive iron hook with a sickening crunch just inches from his face, pinning his coat to the ground.

Corrado scrambled backward on his hands and knees, terrified, pleading for his life. "Don't shoot, Vance! Don't shoot! I'll tell you where Don Russo is! He's not at his estate!"

I stepped over Petrov, coming to a stop directly in front of Corrado.

"Where is he?" I demanded.

"He... he knew you'd attack the pier!" Corrado gasped, blood mixing with rain on his face. "It was a distraction! Russo took twenty men and went directly to your Westchester estate twenty minutes ago! He has a master key code provided by Derek!"

My blood went entirely cold. A sickening wave of horror crashed over me.

Derek hadn't just surrendered his rights. He had given Russo the security passcodes to my home before he was taken away.

"Vincent!" I roared, turning around. "Get to the vehicles! NOW!"

I pulled out my phone with trembling hands and dialed the estate's private line.

Static.

The phone lines had been cut.

"Drive!" I yelled at Vincent as we threw ourselves into the SUV. "If anything happens to them... I will burn this entire city to the ground!"
