Chapter 10 - The Garden of Voices

Eighteen months after the rainy afternoon when Dominic Russo had walked into his kitchen expecting silence and heard laughter, the Long Island estate held a celebration unlike any it had ever seen.
The grand rear lawn, sloping down toward the shimmering blue waters of the Atlantic, was covered in white silk canopies, fragrant pink roses, and hundreds of twinkling fairy lights suspended from the ancient oak trees.
Over two hundred guests—family, community members, pediatric staff from the local center, and associates who had earned their place in the new, peaceful era of the Russo family—filled the garden.
Music played softly from a string quartet—bright, cheerful music that echoed across the water.
In the center of the garden, beneath a floral archway woven with white lilies and wild roses, stood Dominic Russo. He wore a flawless black tuxedo, his dark hair neatly styled, looking handsome, formidable, and completely at peace. Beside him stood Marco, wearing a broad, proud smile as his best man.
The music shifted to a slow, breathtaking processional.
Walking down the grass aisle first were the three flower girls: Lucia, Valentina, and Mia. They wore matching ivory dresses with pink silk sashes, carrying baskets of rose petals, throwing them into the air with bright, cheerful laughter that carried across the lawn. They didn't walk like ghosts anymore; they danced down the aisle, their black curls bouncing in the warm afternoon breeze.
And then came the bride.
Elena walked down the aisle on the arm of her father's brother, her uncle, wearing a stunning, simple lace gown that trailed softly across the green grass. She carried a bouquet of wild white roses. Her dark hair was styled up, her face glowing with pure, unadulterated happiness.
When her eyes locked onto Dominic’s, the rest of the world vanished.
Dominic watched her walk toward him, his heart overflowing with a love so deep it washed away every dark shadow of his past. He reached out, taking her hand as she stepped onto the altar, squeezing her fingers gently.
"You look breathtaking," Dominic whispered, his voice thick with emotion.
"You don't look so bad yourself, Don Russo," Elena smiled back, her eyes shining with joyful tears.
The priest spoke his words, but the true vows had already been written in flour on a kitchen floor, in the middle of a gunfight on Route 9, and in the quiet snowstorms of winter nights.
When the priest declared them husband and wife, Dominic pulled Elena into his arms, kissing her deeply as the entire garden erupted into loud, joyful applause.
Mia, Lucia, and Valentina immediately broke rank from the wedding party, running up onto the altar platform, throwing their small arms around their father's legs and their new mother's dress.
Dominic scooped all three girls up into his arms, holding them close while Elena wrapped her arms around the entire group, their collective laughter ringing out under the bright blue sky.
Later that evening, as the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a warm golden glow across the estate, Dominic stood on the edge of the terrace with a glass of champagne in his hand.
Behind him, inside the grand ballroom, the party was in full swing. He could hear the music playing, adults talking, and above it all, the loud, beautiful, off-key singing of his three daughters as they performed a song on stage with Elena.
Marco walked up beside him, resting his elbows on the stone ledge, looking out at the calm ocean.
"Never thought I'd see the day," Marco smiled warmly. "A Russo mansion full of noise."
Dominic looked back toward the bright, glowing windows of the ballroom. He saw Elena laughing, swinging Mia around in a circle, while Lucia and Valentina held hands, singing into a microphone.
He took a sip of his champagne, a deep, unbreakable peace settling into the very core of his soul.

"It's not noise, Marco," Dominic said softly, his face illuminated by the golden light of his home. "It's music."
And for the first time in his life, the Don of Long Island turned back toward the light, leaving the shadows behind forever, and walked inside to join his family.
