Chapter 7 - Shadows on the Harbor

Damien led me out onto the center of the dance floor. The orchestra, sensing the shift in the room's energy, struck up a slow, hauntingly beautiful waltz.

His right hand rested on the small of my back, pulling me close until there was barely an inch between us. My left hand rested on his broad shoulder, our fingers intertwined. As we moved smoothly across the marble floor, the rest of the world seemed to dissolve into a blur of twinkling lights and distant whispers.

“You were incredible back there,” Damien whispered, his eyes locked onto mine.

“I was terrified,” I admitted softly, letting my head rest against his chest for a fraction of a second, listening to the steady, strong rhythm of his heart. “When he looked at me, I felt like I was back in that dirty alley.”

“He will never touch you again, Chloe,” Damien said, his grip on my waist tightening with possessive warmth. “I swear it on my life.”

“Damien...” I looked up, meeting his intense gaze. “What happens now? Once O’Rourke is gone... what happens to Lily? What happens to me?”

Damien stopped dancing, right in the center of the room. He didn't care that dozens of high-society eyes were watching us. He reached up, gently lifting my chin with his fingers.

“Lily is a Gallion,” he said softly. “She will have the best life money can buy. She will be raised with love, safety, and everything Julian would have wanted for her.”

He paused, his thumb softly tracing my lower lip.

“And you, Chloe Sterling... you are the woman who saved my family. You gave me back my soul when I was drowning in revenge. If you want to leave, if you want to go back to nursing or start a new life anywhere in the world, I will give you millions. I will buy you a hospital if that’s what you want.”

My heart sank slightly. He wants me to leave?

“But,” Damien continued, his voice dropping to a raw, emotional whisper, “if you stay... you stay as the mistress of this house. As my partner. As the woman I love.”

My breath caught in my throat. Tears pricked the corners of my eyes. “You... you love me?”

“I loved you the moment I saw you standing in that basement, bleeding, protecting my niece with a broken body and a heart of absolute steel,” Damien said, his eyes shining with uncharacteristic vulnerability. “I spent three years looking past you, Chloe. I will spend the rest of my life looking only at you.”

I didn't answer with words. I leaned up on my tiptoes, closed my eyes, and pressed my lips against his.

The kiss was soft at first, filled with three years of unspoken pain, hidden glances, and shared survival. But as Damien’s arms wrapped around me, pulling me completely against his chest, the kiss deepened into something fierce, passionate, and real.

The crowd around us gasped, then erupted into quiet, polite applause. The king of Boston had chosen his queen.

Suddenly, the grand glass windows overlooking the harbor shattered into a million exploding shards.

CRASH!

Screams echoed through the ballroom as guests threw themselves onto the floor.

“GET DOWN!” Tommy shouted from across the room, pulling his weapon.

Automatic gunfire sprayed across the ceiling, shattering chandeliers and showering the room in crystal and fire.

Arthur O’Rourke hadn't taken his four hours to leave town. He had set a trap of his own.

Through the broken windows, half a dozen masked men dressed in black tactical gear swung into the ballroom on ropes attached to speedboats idling in the harbor below.

Damien instantly covered my body with his own, slamming us behind a heavy oak pillar as bullets tore through the plaster inches above our heads.

“Valen! Cover the exits!” Damien roared, reaching inside his tuxedo jacket and pulling out a sleek black handgun.

“Damien!” I cried, holding onto his arm.

“Stay behind me, Chloe!” Damien yelled over the deafening roar of gunfire. “Tommy! Secure the perimeter!”

Through the smoke and dust, I saw Arthur O'Rourke step through the shattered window frame, holding a heavy assault rifle, his face twisted in psychotic rage.

“GALLION!” O’Rourke screamed above the chaos. “IF I’M GOING DOWN, I’M TAKING EVERYTHING YOU LOVE WITH ME!”

O’Rourke raised his rifle and aimed it directly at the pillar where Damien and I were pinned down.
