Chapter 7 - The Confrontation in the Dark

The night of the storm was the perfect cover. Thunder rolled across the peaks, shaking the glass walls of the mansion, the heavy rain drowning out any sound within the house. Ricardo was gone again, trapped in the city due to a mudslide that had blocked the main mountain highway. Verónica had retired early, after consuming nearly a bottle of expensive red wine to calm her nerves during the storm.
At 2:00 AM, Clara slipped out of her bed. She wore black cotton trousers and a dark sweater. In her pocket, she held her flashlight and the iron key Mateo had crafted for her.
She moved down the service stairs, her bare feet silent against the cold stone. The basement door was unlocked—Verónica never locked the main door, believing that her threats and the digital security pads on the upper floors were enough to keep the servants away.
The basement was freezing. The storm outside had caused the old stone walls to sweat, and water trickled down the granite in small, glittering streams. Clara hurried to the back of the cellar, her heart hammering as she approached the reinforced steel vault door.
"Doña Leonor," Clara whispered through the viewing window, shining her light inside.
The old woman was sitting up, her body shivering beneath the tattered nightgown. When she saw Clara’s face, a look of intense relief passed over her features. "Clara... you came back. The storm... I thought the mountain was falling."
"I have the key, señora," Clara said, her voice shaking with excitement as she pulled the heavy iron piece from her pocket.
She inserted the key into the heavy manual padlock holding the iron bar. Her heart stopped as she remembered Mateo’s warning: If it’s off by half a millimeter, it will snap.
The key slid into the keyway. It felt tight, the old metal resisting. Clara turned it slowly, her muscles straining.
Click.
The padlock snapped open. Clara let out a silent cheer, pulling the heavy lock away and throwing the thick iron bar to the side. The steel door groaned as she pulled it open, the hinges screaming into the dark.
She rushed into the cell, kneeling beside the old woman. "We have to go, Doña Leonor. Come, give me your foot. Let’s get this chain off."
She used a smaller key Mateo had given her for the ankle cuff, but before she could insert it, a sharp, brilliant light flooded the cellar landing behind them.
"How touching," an icy, venomous voice echoed through the basement.
Clara froze, her blood turning to pure ice. She turned around slowly.
Verónica stood at the entrance of the mesh partition. She wasn't wearing her silk robe today; she wore a sharp, black designer suit, her hair pulled back tightly, and in her right hand, she held a small, silver-plated revolver. The barrel was pointed directly at Clara’s chest.
"I knew you were a rat from the moment I saw you, Clara," Verónica said, her beautiful face distorted into a mask of pure, demonic malice. "You thought you were so clever, sneaking into my room, making molds of my keys. You think a dirty little maid can interfere with my life?"
"She is your mother-in-law, Verónica!" Clara shouted, her voice shaking with fury as she stood up, placing her body between the gun and the frail old woman on the floor. "She is Ricardo’s mother! How can you do this to her? How can you live with yourself?"
"Ricardo belongs to me!" Verónica screamed, her eyes flashing with a mad, frantic light. "This old witch wanted to give the entire shipping empire to a local charity! She wanted to leave us with nothing but a stipend! She thought I married her son for love? I married him for the Del Monte fortune, and I won't let a crazy old woman or a pathetic maid take that away from me!"
She raised the gun, aligning the sights with Clara’s forehead. "Nobody will ever look for you, Clara. A poor girl from the barrio... I’ll tell the police you stole my diamonds and ran away in the storm. And as for Doña Leonor... well, I think her health in 'Switzerland' is about to take a turn for the worse."
May you like
"No!" Leonor cried from the floor, pulling her chain. "Leave the girl, Verónica! Take everything! Just don't hurt her!"
"Goodbye, Clara," Verónica whispered, her finger tightening around the trigger.
