Chapter 6 - The Shadows Gather

For three weeks, the city burned in silence.

To the public, it was a series of unexplained warehouse fires, industrial accidents, and sudden police raids on shipping companies. But beneath the surface, Alessio Fontana was systematically dismantling Don Moretti’s empire piece by piece.

Alessio moved like a ghost between safehouses, directing his lieutenants with ruthless efficiency. Moretti’s financial pipelines were cut. His corrupt politicians were exposed and arrested. His harbor warehouses were seized by federal agents tipping off by anonymous leaks from Alessio’s accountants.

Yet, despite his victories, Alessio felt an unfamiliar restlessness.

Every evening, after hours of war councils and bloody reports, he would retreat to his private office and check the secure feed from the mountain compound. Through the high-definition cameras, he watched Greta and Nina. He watched Nina drawing in her sketchbooks on the sunny balcony, or playing chess with the grizzled bodyguards who found themselves utterly charmed by the quick-witted child.

“You check those feeds three times a day, Boss,” Marco remarked one evening, handing Alessio a glass of scotch. “People are going to think you’ve gone soft.”

“I’m keeping an eye on an asset,” Alessio replied smoothly, though he knew it was a lie.

For forty-two years, his life had been defined by violence, power, and paranoia. He had never had a family. Valentina had been a political trophy, a strategic union meant to consolidate power. But watching Nina’s innocent laughter through a digital monitor brought a strange, unfamiliar warmth into his hollow chest.

Suddenly, the red emergency phone on his desk rang.

Alessio picked it up instantly. “Speak.”

“Boss!” the panicked voice of the mountain compound’s head guard came through the line, accompanied by the sound of heavy gunfire in the background. “We’re under attack! They breached the outer perimeter!”

Alessio stood up so fast his chair overturned. “Who? How did they find you?”

“It’s Moretti’s men! They must have tracked the supply truck!” the guard yelled over the deafening noise. “We’re holding the main entrance, but they have heavy weapons! We can't hold them off for long!”

“Get Greta and the girl to the panic room!” Alessio roared into the receiver. “I am coming myself! If a single scratch touches that child, I will skin you alive!”

He slammed the phone down and turned to Marco, his eyes burning with a terrifying fury that Marco had never seen in fifteen years of service.

“Assemble the strike team,” Alessio commanded, his voice trembling with rage. “We are going to the mountains.”
