Chapter 6 - The Awakening

The private clinic in Cherry Hill was disguised as a standard medical office building, tucked away behind a row of ancient oaks. Inside, the third floor had been completely converted into a state-of-the-art intensive care unit, reserved exclusively for the Pierce family's private needs.

Lizzie held Elliot’s hand tightly as they walked down the quiet, carpeted corridor. Her small fingers were warm against his cold skin, and she walked with a quiet reverence, as if she knew that the building held the answer to her future.

Dr. Harding met them outside Room 302, a faint smile on his tired face.

"She woke up about an hour ago, Elliot," Harding whispered, looking down at Lizzie with a warm expression. "She's very weak, and her memory of the incident is foggy, but she's asking for her daughter. The neurological signs are excellent."

Elliot nodded, releasing Lizzie’s hand. "Go on in, sweetheart. I’ll be right here."

Lizzie didn't hesitate. She pushed the heavy wooden door open and slipped inside. Through the glass partition, Elliot watched as the little girl sprinted across the room, climbing carefully onto the side of the hospital bed to throw her arms around her mother's neck.

Clara Vale let out a weak, tearful gasp, her thin arms wrapping around her daughter as she buried her face in Lizzie's brown curls. The monitor beside the bed spiked slightly with emotion, but it was a healthy, living sound.

Elliot stood outside the glass, his arms crossed over his chest, watching the reunion with a profound, heavy silence. He felt like an outsider looking into a world he had never been allowed to inhabit—a world of unconditional love, of safety, of blood that didn't involve a crime.

"She’s a beautiful child, Elliot," Dr. Harding said, standing beside him. "You did a good thing. Your father wouldn't have understood it, but you did a good thing."

"My father is dead, Harding," Elliot said, his voice flat. "And his methods died with him."

The door to the clinic’s main entrance suddenly burst open down the hall.

One of Elliot's security guards, a young man named Tommy, ran toward them, his face covered in sweat, his hand reaching into his jacket.

"Boss! We’ve got a problem!" Tommy gasped, stopping five feet away. "Two black SUVs just pulled into the lower lot. They bypassed the security gate. I recognized the plates—they’re Sal Vance’s men. There’s at least six of them, and they’re carrying heavy iron."

Elliot didn't panic. He didn't even look toward the elevator. He simply reached back, pulled his silver revolver from his waistband, and checked the cylinder with a sharp, mechanical click.

"Harding, lock the door to Room 302 from the inside," Elliot ordered, his voice dropping into that terrifyingly calm register. "Do not open it until you hear my voice."

He looked at Tommy and Marco, who had already drawn his weapon.

"Let’s go downstairs," Elliot said, a cold, predatory smile spreading across his face. "It’s time to show Sal Vance what happens when you bring an old man’s war into my house."
