Chapter 8 - The Masterstroke

The room seemed to shrink. Several board members standing nearby gasped softly, realizing the catastrophic financial trap Gregory and Sterling had just set for Kane Global.

I felt a wave of nausea wash over me. Gregory had done it. He had used corporate sabotage to force my hand.

I looked at Adrian, expecting to see fury, panic, or defeat on his face.

Instead, Adrian smiled.

It was a cold, sharp, brilliant smile that made even Gregory’s smirking expression waver.

“Is that all, Gregory?” Adrian asked casually, taking a slow sip of his champagne.

Gregory blinked, caught off guard. “What?”

Adrian pulled a sleek black smartphone from his pocket, tapped the screen once, and held it up to his ear.

“Naomi,” Adrian spoke into the phone. “Execute the buyout.”

Within three seconds, the massive digital media screen above the MoMA staircase—which had been displaying philanthropic sponsor logos—flashed red, transitioning into a live financial press release from Bloomberg News:

"KANE GLOBAL ACQUIRES ATLANTIC CENTRAL RAILROAD IN $1.2 BILLION HOSTILE TAKEOVER."

Richard Sterling went deathly pale. His champagne glass nearly slipped from his fingers. “The… the Atlantic Central Railroad?”

“Vance Logistics relies entirely on Atlantic Central’s regional rail lines to move eighty percent of its freight, doesn't it, Gregory?” Adrian said smoothly, putting his phone away.

He took a step closer to Gregory, towering over him with absolute, dominating authority.

“As of two minutes ago, Kane Global owns the tracks, the trains, and the distribution hubs your family’s firm uses,” Adrian explained softly, his voice echoing in the quiet atrium. “Effective immediately, Atlantic Central has canceled all shipping contracts with Vance Logistics due to regulatory non-compliance. Your family’s company is bankrupt, Gregory. By midnight, your stock will be worthless.”

Gregory stared at the massive screen in utter horror. His hands began to shake violently. “You… you spent a billion dollars just to crush a distribution company?!”

“I spent a billion dollars to buy a railroad network my firm needed anyway,” Adrian corrected coldly. “Crushing you was simply an added benefit.”

Two uniformed police officers stepped forward from the back of the hall, accompanied by Naomi Price, Adrian’s legal counsel.

“Gregory Vance,” the lead officer announced, pulling out a set of handcuffs. “You are under arrest for corporate espionage, felony wire fraud, and violation of a temporary restraining order.”

As the officers grabbed Gregory’s arms and dragged him backward through the crowd of gasping socialites, Gregory screamed frantically over his shoulder:

“Elena! Please! Tell him to stop! You’re my wife!”

I stood beside Adrian, looking at the man who had tormented me for years. I felt no anger, no hatred—only a quiet, profound liberation.

“I was never your wife, Gregory,” I said clearly. “I was just your prisoner. And I’m free now.”
