Chapter 7 - The New Foundation

One year later.

In downtown Boston, a brand new, four-story brick building stood proudly near the Harvard Medical Campus. A large chrome plaque beside the grand glass entrance read:

THE EMMA & SOPHIE THOMPSON CENTER FOR PEDIATRIC MEDICINE.

Inside the main atrium, hundreds of guests—doctors, researchers, city officials, and families—gathered for the grand opening ceremony.

The Tokyo agreement had yielded its first major breakthrough: a revolutionary, low-cost therapy for children suffering from severe autoimmune deficiencies. The facility in Boston was built specifically to administer the treatment to children from low-income families completely free of charge.

Michael stood at the podium on the stage, wearing a sharp blue suit. He looked younger, healthier, and happier than he ever had in his life. The dark circles under his eyes were gone, replaced by a deep, peaceful warmth.

Standing beside him on the stage were nine-year-old Emma and Sophie, both wearing lovely white summer dresses, holding ribbons and big golden scissors. Maria stood in the front row, wearing a proud, glowing smile, wiping tears from her eyes.

Michael leaned toward the microphone, his voice echoing warmly through the crowd.

"Two years ago," Michael spoke, looking down at his daughters, "I thought that success was measured by market caps, global partnerships, and corporate power. I thought that building a massive empire was the best way to protect my family."

The crowd was completely silent, listening intently.

"I was wrong," Michael continued gently. "Power doesn't protect the people you love. Love protects the people you love. Presence protects them. Being there when the storm hits... that is what matters."

He looked down at Emma and Sophie, who were looking up at him with unbridled love and admiration.

"This center is named after my daughters," Michael said, his voice thick with emotion. "Because they taught me what really matters in this life. They survived the coldest storm, and in doing so, they brought light back into my world. Today, we dedicate this center to every child who needs shelter, care, and a chance at a healthy life."

The audience erupted into overwhelming, thunderous applause!

Michael smiled, kneeling down between his twins. "Are you ready, girls?"

"Ready, Daddy!" they said in unison.

Together, Michael, Emma, and Sophie cut the thick red ribbon. The crowd cheered loudly as balloons dropped from the atrium ceiling.

Sophie wrapped her arms around Michael’s neck, kissing his cheek. "I love you, Daddy."

"I love you too, sweetie," Michael whispered, holding her tight.

"Best day ever!" Emma yelled, catching a gold balloon as it floated past.
