Chapter 9 - A New Dawn

One year after the night of the flight I never took.

The grand dining room of the Hales estate was filled with warm candlelight, fresh flowers, and the delicious aroma of a home-cooked Tuscan dinner.

Sitting around the long oak table were close friends, Owen's physical therapy team, and my senior executives from the firm—who were still marveling at the radical transformation of their once-cold, ruthless CEO into a relaxed, warm, and deeply happy father.

Owen and Ellis sat at the head of the table in their booster chairs, wearing matching navy suits, happily eating ice cream with strawberry sauce. Owen no longer needed leg braces; he ran, jumped, and played with the effortless joy of any healthy two-year-old boy.

I stood up at the head of the table, holding a glass of champagne.

The room fell quiet as everyone turned to look at me.

"A year ago," I began, my voice steady, filled with rich warmth, "I believed that safety meant solitude. I believed that if I kept my world locked down, quiet, and spotless, I could protect my sons from the pain of loss."

I looked down at Owen and Ellis, who both grinned up at me with sweet, chocolate-smudged faces.

"I was wrong," I continued softly. "Life isn't found in sterile order. Life is found in the chaos, the noise, the unscripted games on the living room rug, and the courage to open your heart again after it has been broken."

I turned my head to look at Marin, who was sitting beside my sons, wearing a simple, elegant rose-colored dress.

"Marin," I said, my voice trembling slightly with deep emotion. "You walked into a house of shadows carrying a lamp of pure grace. You taught my sons how to walk, but more importantly, you taught their father how to live again."

I stepped away from the head of the table, walked over to her chair, and reached into my jacket pocket.

The room held its breath.

I sank down onto one knee on the hardwood floor beside her chair, opening a small, black velvet box to reveal a timeless sapphire ring framed by brilliant diamonds.

Marin gasped, her hand flying to her mouth, tears of joy instantly welling in her clear blue eyes.

"Julian..." she whispered.

"Marin Vance," I said, looking up into the eyes of the woman who had transformed our universe. "Will you do us the honor of becoming my wife, and making this home complete forever?"

Owen leaned over his booster chair, clapping his hands wildly. "Say yes, Marin! Say yes!"

The entire room erupted into laughter and joyful applause.

Marin dropped down to her knees beside me on the floor, throwing her arms around my neck, kissing my cheek with overflowing love. "Yes! A thousand times yes, Julian!"
