Chapter 6 - The Unraveling

The family court hearing for the custody of Clara Rose Martinez was held in a private courtroom on the fourth floor of the Boston Municipal Courthouse.
Outside the courtroom, reporters gathered, their camera flashes creating a blinding light show against the marble walls.
Inside, the atmosphere was thick with tension.
Richard Vance sat at the prosecution table alongside Eleanor Vance and their high-priced legal team, looking arrogant and completely confident.
Gabriel sat at the defense table with Arthur and Regina. He wore a sharp black suit, his posture rigid, his dark eyes fixed on the judge's bench.
In the back row of the gallery sat Clara, accompanied by Catherine Morrison. The little girl wore a neat blue dress, holding her mother’s old photograph tightly in her small hands.
Judge Margaret Miller, a stern, grey-haired woman with thirty years on the bench, banged her gavel.
"We are here today," Judge Miller announced, "to resolve the emergency custody petition filed by Gabriel Mendes regarding the minor child, Clara Rose Martinez. Mrs. Vance, as the state representative, you may present your arguments."
Eleanor Vance stood up, smoothing her suit jacket.
"Your Honor," Eleanor began smoothly, "the state maintains that Mr. Mendes is an unfit custodial parent. He has recently vacated his corporate position amid intense scandal, possesses no parental history, and offers an unstable, high-risk environment for a grieving child."
"Is that all, Mrs. Vance?" Judge Miller asked, looking over her spectacles.
"We request that Clara remain in state care," Eleanor concluded, sitting down with a victorious smirk.
Judge Miller turned her gaze to Gabriel’s table. "Mr. Mendes. Your counsel may respond."
Arthur stood up, holding a thick leather binder.
"Your Honor," Arthur said, his voice echoing clearly through the quiet courtroom. "Before we address Mr. Mendes’s parental qualifications, we request permission to submit crucial evidence regarding the objectivity and legality of the state supervisor’s claims."
Eleanor’s brow furrowed. Richard Vance leaned forward, a shadow of unease crossing his face.
"What evidence?" Judge Miller asked.
Arthur walked over to the clerk, handing over a copy of the encrypted hard drive files and federal financial audits.
"We have submitted verified bank logs and federal affidavits," Arthur announced loudly, "proving that Eleanor Vance accepted over six hundred thousand dollars in illegal offshore bribes from Richard Vance—bribes routed through a fraudulent shell company to use her state authority to weaponize custody proceedings against my client!"
Gasps erupted across the gallery.
"That is a lie!" Eleanor shrieked, jumping to her feet, her face turning crimson. "This is slander!"
"Silence!" Judge Miller slammed her gavel down forcefully.
At that exact moment, the heavy double doors at the back of the courtroom burst open.
Four federal agents in dark suits stepped into the room, led by an Assistant United States Attorney.
The federal prosecutor walked down the center aisle, holding a set of signed federal arrest warrants.
"Judge Miller," the prosecutor announced, "I apologize for the interruption, but federal marshals are here to execute arrest warrants for Richard Vance and Eleanor Vance for federal wire fraud, bribery of a state official, and grand jury indictments regarding corporate embezzlement."
Richard Vance’s face went dead pale. He tried to stand up and run toward the side exit, but two federal agents immediately intercepted him, forcing his arms behind his back and clicking steel handcuffs around his wrists.
Eleanor fell back into her chair, sobbing hysterically as another agent stepped forward to place her under arrest.
The entire courtroom devolved into total chaos as reporters scribbled furiously in their notebooks and camera shutters clicked endlessly from the doorway.

In the middle of the storm, Gabriel slowly stood up from his table. He didn't look at Richard or Eleanor as they were dragged out in chains.
He turned his back on them entirely, walking down the aisle toward the back row where his daughter sat.
