Chapter 3 - The Emergency Summit

At 4:00 PM, my doorbell rang. It wasn't a frantic knock this time. It was a heavy, deliberate, three-part rhythm that belonged to my father, Richard Carter.

I walked to the door, checked the peephole, and saw him standing alone in the hallway. He looked ten years older than he had at the dining table just forty-eight hours ago. His expensive gray suit was rumpled, his tie was slightly askew, and he was holding a leather briefcase like a shield against an oncoming tide.

I unlocked the door and pulled it open halfway, keeping my expression entirely neutral.

"May I come in, Naomi?" my father asked. His voice lacked its usual booming authority; it sounded dry, tired, and fragile.

"You have ten minutes, Richard," I said, stepping back to let him pass. I didn't call him 'Dad.' The word felt too sacred for a man who had witnessed forgery and smiled over wine glasses.

Richard stepped into the apartment, his eyes scanning the clean, minimalist living room with a look of quiet bewilderment, as if he were seeing how I lived for the very first time. He set his briefcase on the coffee table but didn't sit down.

"Your mother is hysterical," he began, keeping his hands clasped tightly in front of him. "She's currently at a bridal boutique trying to cancel alterations, and the owner is threatening legal action over unpaid balances. Julian’s parents have officially pulled out of the rehearsal dinner venue."

"That sounds like a conversation you should be having with your financial advisor, not me," I replied, remaining standing by the kitchen counter.

Richard swallowed hard, his Adam's apple bobbing sharply. He reached into his briefcase and pulled out a thick envelope, sliding it across the coffee table.

"I know about the trust deed," he said quietly. "I know you saw the PDF I sent."

"And?"

"Your mother... your mother was the one who pushed for it," he confessed, staring down at the polished wood of the table. "When Sienna got engaged to Julian, your mother panicked. The Vance family is old money, Naomi. They look down on us. Your mother was terrified that if Sienna didn't walk down that aisle looking like a European princess, the Vances would humiliate us in elite circles. She said... she said you were self-sufficient. She said you didn't need property or wealth because you had your career."

"So she committed fraud?" I asked, my voice cutting through his excuses like a scalpel. "She forged my signature on a two-million-dollar asset transfer and you signed as a witness? That’s not panic, Richard. That’s a felony."

My father flinched, finally looking up at me. His eyes were bloodshot. "If this comes out—if the trust discrepancies are flagged during the title audit for Sienna's mortgage—the bank will freeze every account we have. My firm will conduct an internal ethics review. I could lose my pension, my standing, everything I’ve worked forty years to build."

"You built your life on a foundation of sand," I said coldly. "You traded your integrity for social climbing, and you spent my entire life teaching me that my value as a daughter was measured by how quietly I could sit in the corner while you handed my future to my twin."

"We didn't mean to destroy you, Naomi," he whispered, his voice cracking. "We just... we took you for granted. We thought you'd always be there, absorbing the shock."

"Well, the shock absorber broke," I said, walking over to the coffee table and picking up the envelope. I didn't open it. I simply tossed it back toward him. "Take your envelope, Richard. Take your forged deeds, your broken wedding contracts, and your hollow social status."

"What do you want, Naomi?" he cried out, his composure finally shattering. "Name your terms! Do you want the trust deed reversed? Do you want us to publicly apologize? What will it take for you to call your contacts and save this wedding?"

May you like

"There is nothing you can offer me that will fix what you broke," I said, opening the apartment door wide. "Tell Sienna congratulations on her wedding—whoever she ends up marrying in her backyard. Because as far as the country club, the imported orchids, and the royal guest list are concerned? That show is canceled."

Richard stood frozen for a long moment, staring at me as the bitter reality of his own making settled over his shoulders. Without another word, he picked up his briefcase, turned around, and walked out of my life, his head bowed in absolute defeat.
