Chapter 4 - The Arraignment

At 9:30 AM, courtroom 4B of the King County Justice Center was standing room only.
News of the arrest had hit the local Seattle media late the previous evening: PROMINENT MERCER ISLAND SOCIALITE CHARGED WITH FELONY CHILD ENDANGERMENT AFTER LEAVING GRANDDAUGHTER DURING ANAPHYLAXIS.
Patricia and Claire were brought out from the holding cell wearing blue jail jumpsuits. Their hair was unstyled, their makeup smeared, and their faces etched with deep, furious shock. Patricia looked around the gallery, frantically searching for friendly faces, but found only camera lenses and stern-faced reporters.
Daniel sat behind the defense table with a low-cost public defender he had been forced to hire after discovering his personal credit cards were completely declined at his private attorney's office.
I sat in the front row of the gallery, wearing a tailored navy suit, my posture straight as a steel rod, looking directly into Patricia's eyes.
"All rise," the bailiff announced as Judge Victoria Reyes took the bench.
The prosecutor stood immediately. "Your Honor, the State moves for substantial bail for Patricia Carter and Claire Carter. The evidence against the defendants includes recorded emergency calls, text messages explicitly acknowledging the victim's respiratory distress, and eyewitness statements from school medical personnel confirming the defendants refused emergency medical intervention to preserve recreational plans."
Patricia couldn't contain herself. She leaned toward her attorney, her loud whisper carrying across the courtroom. "This is absurd! My daughter-in-law is doing this out of malice! Tell the judge who I am!"
Judge Reyes slammed her gavel down with a sharp crack that silenced the entire room.
"Mrs. Carter! You will keep your mouth shut in my courtroom, or I will cite you for criminal contempt before we even discuss bail!" Judge Reyes barked, her eyes flashing with severe displeasure.
The defense attorney stood up nervously. "Your Honor, my clients have no prior criminal record. They are pillars of the Mercer Island community. This was a terrible family miscommunication—"
"A miscommunication?" Judge Reyes interrupted, holding up the medical report from St. Agnes. "The victim’s airway was ninety percent closed when paramedics arrived at a neighbor's house. The victim’s prescribed life-saving medication was locked inside defendant Patricia Carter’s handbag while she was three miles away at a country club."
Judge Reyes looked over her glasses at Patricia and Claire, her expression filled with absolute disgust.
"Bail is set at two hundred and fifty thousand dollars each," Judge Reyes declared. "Furthermore, a temporary protection order is issued immediately. Neither defendant, nor Daniel Carter, may come within one thousand feet of Lily Carter or Eva Carter. Surrender your passports to the clerk."
Patricia slumped into her chair, clutching her chest. "Two hundred and fifty thousand?! Daniel! Pay it! Use the trust account!"
Daniel stood up, his voice cracking with humiliation. "Mom... I can't! The trust accounts are frozen! Eva froze everything! My cards don't work!"
Patricia’s head snapped toward me in the gallery. Her face twisted into a mask of pure, demonic rage.
"You!" Patricia screamed across the courtroom, pointing a wrinkled finger at me as the bailiffs grabbed her arms. "You ungrateful little street trash! I gave you a family! I let you into my home! You destroyed my son, and now you’re doing this?!"
I didn't blink. I didn't flinch.

I simply raised my chin, looked her dead in the eye, and mouthed three words:
