Chapter 9 - Thanksgiving at Elm Street

On Thanksgiving Day, the house on Elm Street was filled with a sound it had not heard in years: warm, uninhibited laughter.

The long oak dining table in the sunroom was set with warm yellow placemats, fresh autumn flowers, and my father’s favorite china plates that had been locked away in the china cabinet for a decade.

Around the table sat the people who had become our true family: Priscilla, her husband David, Walter Finch and his wife, and two young nurses from my hospital floor who didn't have family in the state.

Josephine sat at the head of the table—the very seat where my father used to sit—wearing a bright blue dress, proudly serving slices of apple pie she had helped bake that morning.

Walter Finch stood up, holding his glass of sparkling cider, tapping his fork lightly against the glass.

"I’d like to make a toast," Walter said, his voice warm and echoing softly off the wooden beams. "To Richard Vance, a man of profound wisdom who knew how to protect what mattered most. And to Whitney and Josephine—who turned a storm into a homecoming."

"To Whitney and Josephine!" everyone cheered, clinking their glasses together in a joyful, musical chorus.

I looked around the table at the smiling faces, the warm food, the glowing candlelight, and the absolute safety that filled every corner of the room.

There were no whispers behind closed doors. No forgotten plates. No cruel votes taken in warm living rooms while a child shivered outside in the cold.

After dinner, as the guests were helping clear the dishes, I stepped out onto the front porch.

The evening air was crisp and freezing, the stars shining bright and sharp in the clear November sky.

I walked to the top step—the very step where Josephine had sat four weeks ago, soaked, shivering, and holding her backpack like a shield.

I sat down on the dry wooden board, pulling my coat tight around me, looking out at the peaceful, quiet street.

The porch light above me cast a warm, golden circle of light across the steps.
