Chapter 3 - THE DESPERATE ASSEMBLY

By Wednesday evening, the atmosphere inside the Westmoreland house was toxic with desperate rage.

Evelyn had called an emergency meeting in the grand dining room. Sitting around the long, polished mahogany table were Megan, Walter, and Harrison Finch—a slick, aggressive defense lawyer whom Walter had hired from a firm downtown.

Surrounding them were stacks of old financial records, property tax receipts, and family photograph albums.

“There must be a loophole, Harrison!” Evelyn demanded, pacing behind her chair, her pearl necklace rattling against her silk blouse. “I am Thomas’s widow! I lived in this house for thirty years! You cannot tell me a daughter can throw her own mother onto the street over a minor misunderstanding with a key!”

Harrison Finch leaned back, rubbing his temples. He had spent three hours reviewing the documents Vance had served.

“Mrs. Brooks,” Finch said gravely, “it isn't a misunderstanding. Your late husband’s trust was drawn up by one of the top estate firms in the Pacific Northwest. It is airtight. You were granted a life estate, yes. But that life estate was contingent upon three specific covenants.”

He tapped the document with his pen.

“Covenant One: Payment of taxes. You are three years delinquent. Covenant Two: No encumbrances. You took out a $150,000 loan without the Trustee’s written consent. Covenant Three: Protection of the primary beneficiary’s interests. Locking an eleven-year-old child out in a freezing rainstorm for five hours—resulting in hospitalization—is a direct, catastrophic breach of your duty of care.”

Megan slammed her hand on the table. “Rachel is overreacting! Lily isn't even a real Brooks! She was adopted from an agency in California! She doesn't have a drop of our blood!”

Finch turned his gaze toward Megan, his expression cold and unimpressed. “Miss Brooks, if you say that word 'blood' inside a courtroom in front of Judge William Mercer, he will personally sanction you for contempt. Under Oregon law, an adopted child has the exact same legal status, rights, and protections as a biological child. Furthermore, the trust explicitly defines 'heirs' as any legally adopted children of Rachel Brooks.”

Walter stood up, his face red with anger. “So what are you saying, Finch? We just pack our bags and leave? Where are we supposed to go? We don't have $150,000 to pay back the bank!”

“If you don't leave by Friday at 10:00 AM,” Finch said plainly, “Arthur Vance will file criminal charges. The bank forgery charge alone carries a mandatory minimum sentence of 24 months in state prison. If I were you, Mr. Hayes, I would start packing.”

Evelyn’s eyes narrowed into dark, bitter slits. “No.”

The room went quiet.

“Mother?” Megan asked nervously.

“I am not leaving my home,” Evelyn said, her voice dropping into a dangerous, icy register. “Rachel wants a war? I will give her one. She thinks she’s the only one with secrets? I know things about her past—about her time in California before she adopted that girl—that could ruin her reputation in this city forever.”

Finch sighed, closing his briefcase with a loud snap. “Mrs. Brooks, as your legal counsel, I strongly advise against attempting blackmail against a sitting prosecutor in the county judicial system.”

“She’s my daughter,” Evelyn hissed. “She will break before I do.”
