Chapter 7 - The Arraignment and the Unraveling

On Thursday morning, the courtroom of the municipal district court was packed to the gills.
Local reporters, curious onlookers, and a handful of internet commentators who recognized my face whispered among themselves as the bailiff banged his gavel and announced the arrival of Judge Marcus Vance.
Vanessa Lawson—no longer wearing cream-colored yoga pants and cashmere, but dressed in a standard-issue orange jumpsuit with her hair unstyled and her face devoid of designer makeup—was led through the side door in handcuffs.
She looked smaller, paler, and infinitely more pathetic than she did on her polished Instagram grid. When her eyes scanned the gallery and locked onto mine, a flash of pure, unadulterated venom crossed her features. She opened her mouth as if to speak, but her defense attorney—a high-priced corporate lawyer David had somehow managed to retain—instantly placed a restraining hand on her shoulder and forced her down into her seat.
The proceedings moved with terrifying speed.
Prosecuted by assistant district attorney Marcus Cole, the state presented the evidence in a neat, devastating package: Dr. Thorne’s pediatric report detailing the physical trauma and defensive angles of the cut; the forensic extraction of the live-stream audio where Vanessa explicitly confessed her jealousy and desire to punish Lily for overshadowing Chloe; and the digital forensics report proving she had violated the emergency protective order by launching a targeted slander campaign on the community board under a burner account.
Judge Vance listened with a grim, unblinking expression.
When Vanessa’s attorney stood up to argue for a reduction in bail, claiming that his client was a pillar of the community suffering from severe digital exhaustion and stress-induced behavioral anomalies, Judge Vance didn't even let him finish his sentence.
"Counsel," Judge Vance said, his voice echoing off the mahogany walls of the courtroom, "your client did not suffer a behavioral anomaly. She engaged in targeted, malicious assault against a six-year-old child out of vanity and internet-driven narcissism. She used a minor as collateral damage for her brand metrics, and when caught, she attempted to intimidate the victim's family through cyber-harassment."
Vanessa winced visibly, her shoulders slumping.
"Bail is denied," Judge Vance continued, striking his gavel with a decisive crack. "The defendant will be held at the county correctional facility pending trial on charges of domestic assault against a minor, reckless endangerment, and witness tampering. Furthermore, the court issues a permanent, lifetime restraining order barring the defendant from any contact whatsoever with Rachel Mercer and her daughter Lily."

As the bailiff stepped behind Vanessa and clicked the handcuffs into place to lead her back to holding, she cast one final, desperate look toward the gallery.
No one was looking back. David wasn't even in the courtroom. He had already fled to Florida two days earlier, abandoning his wife, his house of cards, and his ruined reputation to salvage whatever cash he had left in un-frozen accounts.
