Chapter 7 - Maya’s Return

At 3:30 PM, a sleek black sedan pulled up the estate’s driveway.

The front door opened, and Maya stepped inside. She was dressed in a simple, elegant navy sweater and trousers I had sent to her hotel, her hair drawn back neatly. She looked rested, though a lingering hesitation showed in her posture as she stepped onto the polished marble entrance hall.

The moment Ethan and Caleb heard the front door, they came sprinting down the hallway from the kitchen.

“MAYA!” Caleb screamed at the top of his lungs.

“MAYA!” Ethan echoed, running faster than I had ever seen him run.

Both six-year-old boys threw themselves into her arms, tackling her around the waist. Maya dropped to her knees on the marble floor, wrapping her arms tightly around both of them, burying her face in their shoulders as tears spilled freely down her cheeks.

“I missed you so much!” Caleb sobbed, clutching her sweater. “I thought those bad men took you away forever!”

“Nobody is ever taking me away, Caleb,” Maya whimpered, kissing his forehead, then hugging Ethan tightly. “I’m right here. I’m right here.”

Ethan pulled back slightly, looking into her eyes with serious, quiet intensity. “I told Daddy the truth, Maya. I told him Mommy put the box in your bag.”

Maya touched Ethan’s cheek softly, her voice filled with deep tenderness. “You were so brave, Ethan. Thank you.”

I walked down the hallway, stopping a few feet away, watching the three of them.

When Maya looked up at me, she stood up slowly, smoothing her trousers, looking somewhat formal. “Mr. Hale... I don't know how to thank you for what you did last night. Mr. Vance explained everything you did to get me out.”

“You don't owe me any thanks, Maya,” I said gently. “I owe you an apology. You were subjected to an unthinkable nightmare in my home because of my wife’s sickness. I am deeply, profoundly sorry.”

Maya shook her head. “You didn't do it, Mr. Hale. You saved me.”

“I want you to stay, Maya,” I said, looking her straight in the eyes. “Not as an underpaid employee, but as the head of domestic care for my sons. I’ve doubled your salary, established a full college trust fund for your younger sister, and my legal team has guaranteed that you will never have to face Vivian Hale ever again.”

Maya gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. “Mr. Hale... that’s too much...”

“It’s not enough,” I replied firmly. “These boys love you. You protected them when their own mother terrorized them. This house needs your light.”

May you like

Maya looked down at Ethan and Caleb, who were both holding onto her hands as if afraid she might disappear if they let go.

A warm, radiant smile broke through her tears. “I’d love to stay, Mr. Hale.”
