Chapter 8 - The Trap Springs

"Drop the weapon!" a megaphone roared through the glare. "Federal agents! Drop the gun now!"
Grant panicked. He spun around, aiming his gun toward the tree line, firing two wild shots into the dark.
Bang! Bang!
Before he could fire a third, a sniper’s bullet tore through his right shoulder. The silver revolver flew from his hand, clattering onto the gravel as he fell to his knees, screaming in pain.
Melissa shrieked, falling to her knees beside him, her hands raised in the air.
"Don't shoot! Don't shoot!" she screamed, her face contorted in absolute terror. "It was him! He made me do it! He was the one who came up with the plan!"
Detective Vance stepped out from the lead cruiser, his weapon drawn, his face grim. "Melissa Callahan, Grant Holloway, you are under arrest for federal conspiracy, wire fraud, and the first-degree murder of Emma Callahan."
As the officers rushed forward, throwing them onto the gravel and clicking the handcuffs into place, Melissa looked up at me.
"David, please!" she begged, her voice cracking. "I'm your sister! We are the same blood!"
I looked down at her. The woman who had shared my childhood, the woman who had held my daughter when she was a baby. I felt no anger anymore. I felt only a profound, hollow emptiness.

"My sister died a long time ago, Melissa," I said softly. "The day you decided my daughter’s life had a price tag."
I turned my back on her as they dragged them toward the police cars, her screams of protest fading into the hum of the emergency sirens.
