Chapter 8 - The True Value of Work

The tear echoed like a gunshot in the quiet conference room.

Ethan’s smile disappeared instantly. His lawyers both took an abrupt step forward.

"Are you insane?" Ethan demanded, his voice losing its controlled polish. "That was ten million dollars!"

"You still don't understand, do you?" I said, leaning over the table. "My grandfather built that valve design with his own hands in a cold garage because he wanted to make heating systems safer for working families. You stole his work, put your name on it, and used it to build an empire while treating people who actually work for a living like dirt."

"Jake, please—" my mother whispered, clutching my arm.

"Mom," I said, turning to her with absolute calm. "If we take his dirty silence money, we are no better than Linda, Richard, and Greg. We become the very people who buried Grandpa’s legacy."

I turned back to Ethan. "Here are my terms. You don't buy my silence. Vance Industries will publicly credit Henry Vance as the co-founder and chief inventor of the primary safety valve line. You will endow a five-million-dollar scholarship fund at the Minneapolis State Trade Institute in Henry Vance's name, dedicated to training young heating and plumbing technicians."

Ethan stared at me as if I were speaking a foreign language. "And what about the financial compensation for the estate?"

"The remaining estate damages will be settled through open court arbitration, transparently and on the record," Victoria added, stepping in with a sharp smile. "And if you refuse these terms by 8:00 AM tomorrow, we file the patent fraud lawsuit publicly, accompanied by the criminal evidence of evidence destruction provided by Greg Vance."

Ethan stood up so fast his leather chair rolled back into the glass wall. He looked at me with pure, unadulterated hatred.

"You're destroying your own family for a pride trip, technician," Ethan spat.

"No," I replied, standing up to face him, drawing myself to my full height. "I'm restoring the pride your company stole from my family forty years ago. Now get out of my lawyer's office."
