Chapter 4 - The Fall of the Pretenders

By mid-afternoon, the news of Daniel Reed and Sabrina Cole’s arrest had sent shockwaves through the national financial media.
The tabloid narratives that Daniel had carefully planted hours earlier collapsed like a house of cards. The new headlines read: Whitmore Biotech COO Arrested for $18M Embezzlement Scheme; CEO Clare Whitmore Exposes Corporate Betrayal.
Inside the Fulton County Detention Center, the atmosphere was dark, cold, and smelled of industrial bleach.
Daniel Reed sat at a metal table in a small interrogation room, dressed in an orange jumpsuit. His hair was messy, his charcoal suit replaced by rough cotton. Sitting across from him was Arthur Vance, the expensive divorce litigator he had hired two days ago.
Arthur was casually packing his legal papers back into his briefcase.
"What do you mean you're withdrawing as my counsel?!" Daniel yelled, his voice echoing off the concrete walls. "I paid you a fifty-thousand-dollar retainer!"
"That retainer was paid via a check drawn on your corporate executive account at Whitmore Biotech," Arthur Vance said flatly, pulling his coat on. "An account that was frozen by federal order three hours ago. The check bounced, Mr. Reed."
"I have equity! I have marital rights to Whitmore House!" Daniel pleaded, leaning over the table. "You said we could force a settlement!"
Arthur looked down at Daniel with cold, professional pity. "Your wife’s legal team filed the formal divorce petition an hour ago, attached to your criminal felony charges. Under Georgia law, intentional criminal embezzlement of marital and corporate assets forfeits all claims to equitable distribution. You own nothing, Daniel. You don't own the house, you don't own the stock options, and by Friday, you won't even own a bank account."
"What about Sabrina?!" Daniel stammered. "Her family has real estate!"
Arthur chuckled bitterly. "Sabrina Cole just signed a formal proffer agreement with the District Attorney's office. She is testifying against you in exchange for a reduced sentence. She handed over every text message, every email, and every wire transfer record going back three years. She claims you forced her to steal the Project Helios patent deeds."
Daniel collapsed back into his metal chair, his eyes staring blankly at the stained concrete floor. His grand dream of seizing Whitmore Biotech, living in Whitmore House with his mistress, and retiring a multi-millionaire had evaporated into a twenty-year federal prison sentence.
Meanwhile, three floors above, in the women's holding facility, Sabrina Cole sat on a narrow bench, weeping uncontrollably.
Her expensive designer dress was crumpled, her hair ruined, her phone confiscated. When she asked the guard to call her family, she was told that her parents had instructed the front desk not to accept her calls. Her father had issued a public statement removing her from the Cole family trust to protect their own corporate standing.
She had traded twenty-three years of loyalty, wealth, and unconditional friendship with Clare Whitmore for a man who threw her to the feds the second the lights turned on.
She looked at her reflection in the dirty metal mirror on the wall, remembering the way she had smiled smugly at Clare on the front porch of Whitmore House just forty-eight hours ago.

Now, there were no silk robes. No grand staircases. No multi-million-dollar settlements.
There was only the cold, hard floor of a prison cell, and the unbearable weight of her own greed.
